Hey anyone knows of a DIY for a hook remover tool for PANFISH? (besides a pencil, which I never got to work.
The one at sporting good sections is for Bass or Nothern, not 5 in Gills...

Swallowed hook? not much of anything that's not brutal..

I just started using jigs that mouth hook better and some use circle hooks, I have not tried yet.

I usually tie up a bunch of snelled hooks and take that off a snap swivel then recover the hooks when I clean them.

Or cut the string close to their mouth if they swallow the hook and not bleeding and I throw them back.

Bend down the barbs.
A growing number lakes and reservoirs around here have banned the use barbed hooks. And you'd better not have any barbed hooks in your tackle box (and not just on the end of your line).

That said, I couldn't catch a fish to save my life (in most cases). Fish are safe when I'm near the water.

I don't know much about fishing, but if you have to reach down very far into a narrow tight area, a small pair of alligator forceps will usually work better than a hemostat.

Cut a stick the size of a pencil. Stick it in the fish past the hook. Hold the line against the stick with your thumb. Give the fish a spin. Hook will be in the stick and the fish near your feet.

Use a needle threader (tool typically for threading needles).

As for the original question the barrel from a ball point pen with a notch filed in the end.

This sounds tool cool~BUT, I'm going to try this by myself, so I don't look like a fool if it doesn't work and it just ties my line to a branch wedged in a gills mouth...:geek:

Found this "hook out" tool at an estate sale. Figured it'd be great for grabbing tiny things I dropped in tight places. Only later did I find out it was a fishing plier.

And they still make it! For $15 it's hardly worth fabbing one - unless of course you're into that sort of thing!

This is why I never put hooks on my line when I go fishing. Just a bobber and a sinker. Less fuss with the fish, more relaxing with a beer by the water.

LOL I have one, rusted shut, if I caught a fish big enough for that thing, I'll just stick my arm in... :)

Yes line. It's funnier when Fish and game guy comes by and I tell him I don't need a fishing license and there's no hook on the line and no hooks in my tackle box. Watching the "I GOTCHA!!!" melt is priceless.
