Good set of screw drivers?

I had a set of older craftsmen screw drivers a few of them were the black “professional” line from years back. Had them at my parents place while I was moving and someone doing some work at their place decided they wanted them along with a few other tools…

They weren’t the best but they were good. What’s a decent brand I should be looking at to replace them with that’s fairly budget friendly? I tinker with Japanese dirt bikes and typical projects.

Just ordered a set of Vessel screwdrivers based on the glowing reviews here. They’re supposed to arrive today.

For a good value on made in the USA screwdrivers try the Williams hard handles (like old school snap-on). Use those at work and they hold up great.

Have a set of Felo Ergonics and really like them.

edit: these showed up today. So far they don’t disappoint. Handles were a lot larger that expected (a good thing imho).

I have the vessel black armour grips and they’re really nice for the price, mid $30s on Amazon for the set. I like them more than my Klein/wiha/wera.

I own both the Vessel Megadora/Megadora Impactas and the Wiha Extra Heavy Duty.......I personally find myself always going to the Vessels. Their fit in my hand is perfect. The Wiha's are a close second, but if I had to pick one - hands down the Vessels!

Vessel, Wera, Felo, Wiha, Tekton... there are lots of great options for every budget. My "main" sets are Tekton and Felo, but I have some of each in my collection, plus a few more.

If you have a Menard's nearby, their "Masterforce" line with the clear acetate handles is US-made and quite good if you like that sort of handle. Personally, I absolutely hate these handles because they are slippery, uncomfortable, and dissolve immediately in gasoline and many common garage chemicals. But the tips are good and prices reasonable.


Just to be contrarian here, the screwdriver sets at Harbor Freight are weirdly excellent for the money. They have many different choices under many stupid "brand" names, so take yer pick of the colors and handle styles you like the most.

The cheapest HF screwdriver set is $6.99 and has hideous, blister-producing yellow and black grips. But the tips are fantastic. It's honestly very strange how well these stupid things work at turning screws. They'd be great for car or kid tools. Bang/buck is amazing, and if you really can't stand them, increase your budget a little until you find something you like.

Old Geezer here... Just my two cents for what it's worth, don't get me wrong all the above screwdrivers are fantastic and I own them all, (my screwdriver sickness). But just today at several garage sales I picked up, some really great old screwdrivers for about $1.00 per screwdriver and they were all used for automotive work.

OP you cannot go wrong with any of the above brands, but if you ever find that you have a few hours on the weekend hit a few of your local garage sales and look for that old gold in those vintage screwdrivers.:):D:giggle:

yes, and they do have their place, but do not function as strongly as a regular impact driver, maybe just due to force lost over the longer shaft. with my regular impact driver, things that would break free in one or two strikes take six or eight strikes on the impacta. they are certainly a good tool to have around, especially if you don't have a regular impact driver.

I have the Jaws Fit Megadora in 3 sizes. Absolutley fantastic drivers. But not what I'd label "budget friendly". I lopve them.

Excluding JIS, my recommendation would be Wiha, PB Swiss ... possibly consider Stanley Fatmax (made in France), lovely 2 component handles and cheaper. Tool snobs would overlook the Stanley but they are identical to Facom drivers. I would order the JIS online unless you can source some near to you and buy the rest locally where you can try them out.

JIS is gone now and it now follows the DIN pattern . But do the DIN screwdrivers work as well on older Japanese cars and motorcycles ? Or do you still need the older JIS screwdrivers on the screws with the dot on them ?

Second on the Wrights. While I have a bunch of Vessels, and they're my first choice for any cross-slotted screws, my "backups" are Wrights. They have huge tri-lobe handles and can apply a lot of torque when necessary. They also fit the big cross-slotted fasteners (#4 and #5) better than most other brands.

No one local to me sells them that I know of. I get 75% of my tools from Harry Epstein so it’s no biggie to me! If I had to go local i’d buy HF pittsburgh pro, and use them until my wrights came in, LOL!

The Tektons are really nice for the money. I picked up a nice set when Amazon had them for a randomly good price.

The Walmart Hert screwdrivers are good low end value. They would be tools I would use if I were expecting to lose them but didn't want ****.

Wish I could get those here in the States !
I have a few of those branded SK and they have held up.
