I never got around to posting yesterdays finds:
51600410082_1405b0f560_c.jpg
This is all from about a half-dozen Sunday stops, some of which were good, so not so much, but a beautiful day to be out in any case. An incomplete Indestro socket spinner set, a vintage container of cotter pins, set of Blue Points nut spinners and:
51601888355_5d240bbcf8_c.jpg
Five coasters from various Danish cruiseliners, and Antoine de Saint-Exupery's final, posthumous book. For those who don't know, he was the writer of the very well-loved children's book "The Little Prince" and of many books on aviation. He disappeared during WWII, flying a mission for the Free French, and remnants of his plane were only found many decades later.

3Bay ***** for that Marbles knife for $5. Please post a pic(s) in the Vintage Knife thread when you've finished any de-rusting. Outlaw, I'm a little jealous of your coffee pot, but not enough to head to eBay to find one.
Haha! I've given several. But it's always the times I don't and I get that feeling I should have that are more memorable. Two instances...

Now this is the classy way to talk about prices without talking about prices.

Nice acquisition!

I just needed a $5 bill, didn't mean to make it sound like cost $5, which I WISH was true, lol! And thanks, Lugz!

I was just cleaning up the rest of my finds from yesterday that needed an overnight in the Evaporust tub, so I shot some more pics of the corn husker. Since we don't have any threads for these or any old farm tools, in general, I am posting them here. Apparently, they were typically worn over work gloves, which means this one was made before child labor laws, because there is no way I could get it on over a glove.

Disclaimer: Any offensive hand signs portrayed in the demonstration of this tool are explicitly inadvertent!
"because there is no way I could get it on over a glove."

"If the gloves don't fit, you must acquit!"

le had a sign out say no Sale Today/so didn't go back there on Saturday. The second sale was mainly variety of old things. No tools to speak of. Ladies husband had been into several hobbies and retired from phone work (Bell, Western Electric and A T and T).
Found this old power sander (no date on paper work) which is a Power Craft (Montgomery Wards). Runs great, even with the musty smell from sitting around.
I also picked up some Bell system items: 4 of 556A Hex Offset socket 7/32" and 1 of KS 19192 5/32 Hex wrench with a hole in end for opening security devices. Anyone collect old Bell items?

Pick-ups over the last three weekends or so. Things have definitely slowed down private sales wise but pro sales are still going strong albeit seems most have whole lot of HF type brand tools more than anything so much digging required to uncover the nuggets.

Vulcan screwdriver, William's hammer, set of Blue-Point SAE shorty DBE...........seems like almost no one recognizes the Blue-Point name at sales.

Knipex pliers, Bernzomatic linesman pliers made in Spain? never seen Bernzomatic hand tools other than cheap socket sets, Snap-on speeder, William's & Snap-on extensions.

Blue-Point SAE Tap & Die set.

Mac puller set, Knipex pliers, Thomas & Betts crimper pliers, another Snap-on extension.

And picked up at a farm estate sale that oddly had next to no useable tools, suppose the man of the house passed long ago. So only pick-up was the Barcalo wrench roll, ignore the Barcalo wrenches already had those thus picked up the roll for those. Don't think the wrenches and roll are from the same generation though.

I have had a few pickups where at the time I have texted my "more or less" adult children the specifics, with the caveat, "where to start looking for my body". Couple of really scary situations at first glance have led to some great pickups. Only once have I intentionally taken a backup.

I’ve got some title suggestions:
“Show Your Vulcan Tool!”
“Vulcan Around?”
“Let’s Get Vulcan!”

These Barcaloy marked wrenches may have come in that roll. There are a couple of different styles of Barcaloy combos.

My buddy handed me this heavy bucket of old tools and sockets that he didn't want!
Ten four!

Are there any mfgr/brand markings on those envy-inducing flex nut drivers?

I'd be salivating over the Braunsdorf-Muellers, but I have a set of four. We have a thread (see Index in Sticky on VB) if you feel like posting them somewhere else.

We also have a Southington thread for those "S" wrenches if you're curious.

That early Craftsman DOE was made by Billings. AA is very thorough on identifying Billings as the mfgr for the later "CI" wrenches, but unless I missed it, or they update their site recently, they are mum on the early wrenches. They're Billings also. I have many Billings versions.

Thanks, Mike! The palm of your hand part was obvious. The use of that hook not so much! :) After I cleaned it up and compared it to my Heller Brothers hoof knives, I started to doubt my initial speculation, but I never would've gotten that without help. Here are some close-ups for anyone else who has never seen one before.
I'm waiting on you to post a video of "The Boss" in action!

You guys are going to make me tell one of my Bruce Springsteen stories.

To be objective, and set some context, he used to live about a mile away from me (in Rumson, but Rumson and Fair Haven take up about 3 square miles and share a Group II size high school...), sightings were not at all uncommon (Mrs. Lugz chatted him up at a gas station once, and just about everyone who has ever attended the annual Fireman's Fair has an "I was standing right next to him in line at the Zephyr" type story...), and to his credit, he was very cool about the whole thing, and most people knew better than to ask for an autograph or bother him out with his family for photos.

Anyway, my best story is from a long time ago when his son, Evan, was 12 and playing baseball. I'm the umpire of record for a Little League game between a team from Rumson and Fair Haven at Youth Center North, which is just behind the police station in the middle of town. The players are arriving and starting to warm up and this immaculate yellow Packard 8 pulls up and parks on 3rd Street. I know right away it's him. He walks down looking just like a mechanic who left work to watch his son play, just as you would expect. I **** you not. Black biker boots, torn jeans, and a flannel shirt with the sleeves ripped off. He takes a seat in the stands while Evan joins his team and a buzz starts up.

When I call the coaches to the plate to do ground rules, guess who comes over with the head coach from Rumson?

"My assistant coach can't make it," he says. "Is it okay if Bruce takes 3rd base? I'll see if I can find him a cap."

I smiled and shook his hand, muttered something affirmative, but made a joke about throwing him out of the game if he gave me lip, rock star or not.

Meeting famous people is kinda weird. I was shooting pool in a bar in Sacramento, one that I was on the league team for, and I ended up playing for three hours with this guy one afternoon. He looked like a stoner, but he shoot decent stick. After a while, a friend of mine came in to tell us, as he also knew her, that another friend of ours was having a party. So, as we walked over to George's house, this guy and I ended up talking for a bit, and he asked me what I did for a living. So, I told him about doing logistics for a big-box retailer and I, of course, asked him what he did.

"Oh, I'm a rock star."

Turns out he was Chi Cheng, the bassist for the Deftones, a Sacramento local band. I had no idea. Really nice guy, too bad he ended up dying after a car wreck.

That's a good one! And you're right, it is weird. Believe it or not, Bruce was the first of two "famous" people I met at home plate. The second was Scott "Bam Bam" Bigelow. Also a long, long time ago when I was a relatively rookie ump. I'm not a pro wrestling fan but even I knew who he was. 400 lbs and his entire head was covered with a flame tattoo. He lived close to me, too. In that case, he was actually the head coach of the team. His son was huge, too, and played 1st base. Really nice guy. Unfortunately, he died of a drug overdose in Florida in 2007.

Yeah, I went to high school with a mildly famous person, one of the guys from JackAss, and also with the granddaughter of an insanely famous movie star. But, we all knew both of those people so it doesn't really count.

The guy from Jack *** was also the son of my father's cardiologist.

We all know Sakurama on GJ, does that count?
I don't know who that is, but I'm laughing anyway.

There're only 4 names on my F2F list. Bruce, Bam Bam Bigelow, Neil Young (I'm not going to re-tell it, short version, 1986, Bloomingdales, JFK airport), and Jack ("Pulanski") Palance, who got totally lit, danced his polka *** off, and did one-armed pushups (honest to God, he must've extemporized that in the movie he was famous for it in...) at my uncle and aunt's 50th wedding anniversary in Hazleton, PA when I was just a kid.

I looked for any identifying marks on those flex drivers but I can't find any. There are marks on the very top of the wood handle which I show in the pics but I'm not sure if they're manufacturers marks or counterstamped from someone who owned them! I was so stoked as I was digging through the bucket and pulling out the different wrenches and tools! I will definitely check out those threads for sure, thanks!

Thanks, gearhead. I appreciate it. I really do. I'm glad you didn't take my comment, which clearly says more about me and my secluded myopia than him or the thread's followers, the wrong way. I wasn't trying to diss him or you. I have very little to no sense of GJ (what or who is popular, etc) outside of the Vintage Board, and rarely venture outside of that. For many, many years the Garage Sale thread here on the General Discussion board was the ONLY thread outside of the VB that I regularly participated in. Every once in awhile I would post in the 'Tools of the Old World' thread, when I found a vintage tool made in Europe, or 'Tools of Japan', when I found a vintage tool from Japan. And maybe a few threads from the Wild Old Days, before the Great Schism of 2014, that were stranded up here, like 'Tiny Tools', and 'Oilers.' Before Ryan split the forum into The Garage, The Tools, and Classifieds, everything was in one place and it was a madhouse. Can you imagine reading this thread or the Sakurama thread, *************, and coming back to see a dozen Classified Ads for tools on page 1?

Anyway, there was a time several years ago when I was following two of those kinds of 'Garage Build' threads. One of them was a wealthy guy in California with wealthy-man's cars, and the other was a regular joe in the Midwest somewhere who was restoring an early (1920's I believe) but serious service garage out in the country that was on his property. They sure can be fun.

Lugz,

Don't worry, I took no offense whatsoever. I certainly know the wild wild west feel of the internet having been on it since the early beginning, well prior to Googling..... :ROFLMAO:. I can imagine the basic and rudimentary feel of GJ in it's early stages. I myself am a late comer to being on GJ. It has definitely been a positive thing and has fueled my motivation to get sh*t done around the house and beyond. I enjoy the Lugzonian and all of your imformative posts on vintage tools and the like. You're not too far (relatively) from my location, so perhaps one day I'll be able to tour the Lugzonian. As I'm not far from the NASM, I definitely love vintage and mechanical, all at the same time.....and speaking of famous, I have taken advantage of seeing and meeting many of the Apollo Astronauts (while most were still alive) when they spoke at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. I even had Alan Bean spit on me in the front row during his talk.....:ROFLMAO:

I've met Bruce, built two bikes for him, one is my profile, the other was on the cover of Vanity fair, maintained some of his other bikes.
Been poor picking around here this year for me.

On my final scan of the area I found this Lectrolite 1711R roll, missing the four smallest combos C-12, 14, 16, & 18. This caused me to spend another 30 minutes searching for them to no avail. After pointing out that the set was incomplete, they accepted my offer of $5. Wrenches and roll are in great shape and cleaned up nicely.

AA proposes manufacture dates between the late 40s and very early 50s--just prior to the association with S-K. Several of the later S-K/Lectrolite catalogs have the 1711R set depicted and they certainly bear a striking resemblance to S-K wrenches--right down to the numbering system--even the roll number--I have a 1714 S-K roll (14 wrenches) and this 1711R has 11 wrenches. Without an early Lectrolite catalog--prior to the early 50s, I don't know of a way to date these before the S-K association.

Anyway, another partial set to complete...

Let me.look when I get homr, I.am rpetty sure I have some Lectrolite wremches in the trade pile.
