My father gave me this tool and I'd like to know what it is. It is marked Plomb, but does not have LA or any other markings. The tool measures 10 1/2 inches from the eyelet to the bottom of the prong.

Thanks!

Thank you! Given the tools that Plomb made, I don't think I would have ever guessed a garden tool. With snow on the ground, I am not going to get to try it out for a while :)

Take a picture with a ruler for size. It probably has a specific use that you need someone in their 90's to identify.

It is a weeding tool. Good score they are hard to find.

See I didn't need a ruler and I'm not in my 90s.

Usually they are painted green. If that's the original finish, that's the nicest I've seen.

Google plomb weeder for more images.
You can see the remains of the green finish on it. As implausible as it sounds, that's apparently what it is.

As a self proclaimed plvmb **** and big time enthusiast I have seen these in old catalogues but never a picture of one! Nice find! They are pretty rare since I don't think they made alot of them... I see them in their ads for sale but I also am wondering if they where given away as thank you gifts from tool distributors??

Yep, ball weeder. Those are pretty rare, I have one that's not marked, so I may not be a Plomb. As weeders go, it's pretty lame, so I expect they didn't sell many.

Yes ball weeder. One of the theories as to why they are hard to find is they were used in the yard, and like a lot of yard tools got left outside and the wooden handle got wet and that led to the demise of it. They are cool, I have one in the dark plomb green, which has a "custom" bend to the fork, presumably to improve the effectiveness of it.

It's a dated Thread but the most relevant I could find. Is this an actual tool or a one-off?

Thanks Username and d42. Since the Sig O found it as she does most of the odd things (including me, I suppose) it was imperative that I at least solve the "What is this?" mystery. Can always count on the good people here.

The dating of it seems to go back to 1934 or earlier if I understand the images on The History of PLOMB Tools (http://www.vannattabros.com/plomb/plombtool.html).

Thanks again.
