SK 40970 1/4” ratchet question

Hi all. I have a question about my SK 40970 ratchet.
This was my dads, and before anyone asks, I replaced the pawl with a new DT kit (the old one if fine, and I’ve included the picture)

Question is; mine looks odd as compared to ALL the others I’ve seen. If you look where the handle meets the head, mine has NO “blended curve” into the head, rather it’s a “sharp” meeting of handle-to-head.

I’m not sure of the year, but since I’m 55, I’m guessing this is a 1950’s-early 60’s ratchet?

I’ve included a comparison picture (not my ratchet) and the original pawl, as well as the breaker bar I have (from my dads set)

Any info on this difference would be appreciated. I almost won’t use it- it’s got more sentimental value…

thanks I’m advance

On the early 1/4” drive S-K ratchet that style isn’t unusual. It seems as time went on they transitioned to the more gradual curve. I believe this set to be prewar.

Thank you.
Yes that looks exactly like mine.
Sadly, at one time I had the complete set; box, spinner and all the pieces. Unfortunately they didn’t travel through 4+ decades with me. But at least I still have these.

very nice.

the odd pieces are out there in the second-hand market. finding some of them can be challenging. ;)
Thank you. I’m going to search out the missing pieces to complete “the set” even if only for sentiment.

Big 10-4! I'm seeing selection drop fast at the surplus tool store, quality is sketchy (lots of rust and wear), and prices going up on used sockets.

Do you recall the style of your Dad’s box? The first picture is a postwar set and the second picture is a prewar set. The wartime tools look like the second picture but aren’t chrome plated. Your breaker bar is postwar.

Hi it was definitely the top picture (less “wide”) box for sure. I used to have the green-handled spinner, which I assumed was part of that kit?
So it appears post-war.

brings back memories

I would date that set from between 1946 to around 1952. Your breaker should have the 5/16” crossbar hole. Sombody probably added the green handle spinner since they didn’t start being made until around 1964. The spinners made at the same time as that set would have the more rare amber handles.

Amazing information. Thank you, and yes the breaker does have the cross-bar hole indeed.
