That looks a lot like my Craftsman (husqvarna) mower from 2011. 46" cut, 21 HP single cyl Briggs Intek. Has worked great on the flat acre it mows. Blown a couple head gaskets but it is a Briggs engine. If it is a husky a spindle will be no problem. The last ones I got from Amazon have been great. I think the grease zerk on these is the key.
That sounds promising!
Yeah, looking up parts, show cross compatibility among several craftsman/husky models.

I ordered a key already, as I don’t want to hack wiring to jump it. And looking around on Amazon, I can get a spindle for $20 or so, or a deck rebuild kit for about $100.

When the key gets here, and I hear it want to run, I’ll order the rest of the parts.

Man, I hope this one doesn’t have a bad head gasket lol

I have 5 acres. Mostly “mostly” flat. Some bumps and some inclines where the elevation changes and meets the road.

Looks like I’ll be right at the $200 I was guessing earlier if I buy the deck rebuild kit (all new spindles and blades) vs just getting the single spindle it needs. The blades don’t look too bad, but if I’m gonna be that far in…

If it's just the bearings you can get them at any bearing supply house. Around here I pay 16 bucks or the upper and lower.
The only time I change the spindle is if its bent. Most all consumer grade riding mowers are made by MTD. Parts are pretty
easy to find.

Grease is definitely the key to making them last. But for some reason the manufacturers typically use a sealed bearing, so even if you pump the spindle cavity full of grease, it can't get inside the bearing due to the seals. I took the seals off the inside face of the bearings on mine so they can get some grease.

Oh how I wish it were just bearings. I’m guessing the previous owner ran over debris. Repeatedly.

Turns out the blades are fairly beat up too. So looks like I’m gonna opt for the deck rebuild kit that comes with spindles, blades, pulleys, and belts. I wasn’t going to, but I got the thing fired up fairly easily. Didn’t even have to pull/clean the carb. The fuel in the tank still smelled fresh. Just put on a good battery, added some oil since it was somewhat low, and some starter fluid through the carb, and she lit right off. Took a couple of tries until she idled, but I was able to move her forward and back under her own power. She was a bit jumpy at first. I suppose from sticking parts. Also messed with the blade engagement to see if it were working, and yes it works.

Just got back from picking up this beauty. Decided to take the Cummins as a test drive after the VP44 install and the FASS install. Seems peppier for sure. I didn’t realize how much fuel pressure affects performance. Some sources say down to 5psi minimum for the VP to be happy. Some say above 14psi. I was runnin about 15psi, then pull down to 5-6psi under load.
Now she’s at 17psi at idle, down to 15-16psi under load.

As far as the mower, just got her home. I know absolutely NOTHING about it besides what you see in the pics. Cranks, doesn’t start. But the price was right! FREE fifty lol. I figure if it costs me <$200 to get her goin, I’ll be good. I’m only expecting a season or so out of her TBH. This is gonna be the rough cut mower. I still have a good portion of the property that hasn’t been knocked down, as my brother needed his mower back.

Wish me luck! Lol
Free is a great price, simple machine at least.

That's not a typo? a 21 HP SINGLE from Briggs? :wtf:

Garage adjacent (again)
A pair of sparrows have taken a liking to the lower window trim & mirror on drivers side of the ST. They were reacting with the mirror the way budgies do... & crapping all down the door.
Cleaned it off three times Friday-Sunday.
Yesterday I taped a plastic shopping bag over the mirror. Today: no **** on the door etc.
Ran errands, taped bag back on after I got home.

From the noise I think they're nesting at the neighbors place. Will continue with the bag mod for a few days & then check to see if they have given up.

What were they doing? Grinding stumps?
It came off a 40 acre farm. Dunno how much lawn they had (I only saw the front portion, which was roughly an acre). Who knows what was behind the house, and off in the distance.

My yard is the same. I have trees that drop limbs. Plus quite a few walnut trees in the back tree row. When it was overgrown, it was a hell of a surprise mowing, because all would be smooth, then a “KACHUNK”. That was using my brothers mower. I dare not use my own in that fashion 🤣

Which is what this mower is for. Getting it all knocked down without worry about breaking anything. Hell, I might just throw an edge on these blades for the hell of it and use it as is.

Gonna either have a second deck setup for finishing or a second mower for finishing. When I was looking at this property before I bought it, there were 2 mowers on site. I imagine that’s what the previous owners were doing.

I played with an old homemade slip roller. It came with the tooling for my lathe. I was pretty tickled when I realized it was made to operate in the lathe. I mounted it in the chuck and I'm pretty confident it's how it was intended to be installed. However i could not get it to drive a piece of metal tubing through. It doesn't have the grip. Curious now if it was for wood working or another intended purpose? 🤔

Most slip rolls I've seen are for sheet metal. If it has the cupped rollers, then it's for tubing.

This is the cabinet I built to hold some of my tools. It is 48 tall, 92 wide, and 28" deep.
I am thinking about putting some pegboard on the inside of the doors to hold light stuff like carpenter squares, hand saws, and small hardware.

I am NOT a cabinet maker (yet) and I was proud of myself because the doors open and close properly and do not rub or squeak anywhere. I don't like the gap where the doors meet so I may have to dream up some kind of trim or something to close up this

I had been looking to get a bendpak HD-7W and just so happens a local supplier/installer had one due to a customer backing out. They gave me a discount on it so I bought it + install service.

Well. Had to hit up 5 different stores. Got the spindles, battery, ignition switch and key, and an inner tube from the first place. Then went into the bigger town to track down blades.

Got to the house, installed the spindles and blades. I’m glad I bought 2 spindles though. I was only going to buy the one, but little birdie said to get 2. Glad I did, as the “good looking” one already had one cracked leg. The bearings seem fine though. I may pop them out and keep for spares.

Got the deck cleaned out underneath. Still has original paint in places. I did not power wash, only scrape and scrub with a stiff brush. It looks good. No cancer and only one bend I had to hammer out.

Took the tire off to put the tube in. And for grins, I decided to un bead it and attempt to re bead it using some sprayway glass cleaner (I wanted the foam really. And I already ordered some tire mounting lube). And I’ll be jiggered if it didn’t seat. Filled it to the max 14psi. We will see in the morning if it loses air. I have a feeling it will through the bead, which is why I ordered the tire mounting lube in a bucket. I also have a motorcycle tire doing the same.

Ordered a steering wheel and a front grill. It was cheaper to buy a complete front grill with headlights, than to purchase the headlights separately.

Still need to order a belt. There are 2 sizes apparently. I’ll pull this one off and head down to the local place. See what they have.

My back is KILLING me. So I wanna do this once lol. Plus it being fast spinny things under my feet, I’d like everything to be in good working order lol.

All in, I’m $300 into it. $100 more than I wanted, but I figure it’s better than buying one for $300, then finding out it needs this work as well. I still haven’t been able to make a pass to see how it mows. Spent the portion of the day where the weather was nice running around looking for parts. Got home, and it immediately started raining. Then stopped. Then started howling wind. Then been rainy and windy since. Oh well. Gives me more time to finish it.

Got the replacement passenger fender installed and got the front end buttoned up

And then immediately started tearing into the engine bay. Removed the intake manifold, fuel rail, and exhaust manifold. 2 issues. 1, cracked exhaust manifold, and 2, valve cover gasket is leaking. So much so, that it appears to have soaked into the exhaust manifold gasket. I have to clean that mess off tomorrow, and pull the valve cover.

And, the culprit of the awful sounding exhaust. Crack at the collector on the manifold. Amazing how much racket a tiny crack can make.

I'm not really sure. They are definitely flat rollers, but have an undercut section. I'm thinking maybe wood slats? I'll have to snap a picture. The original owner was a genius. I wish I had an opportunity to sit down and chat with him about all the tooling and cool things he created.

Finished up the winter projects and listed them on fb mp. I like these types of projects because they are inexpensive, take a fair amount of time, and are easy to store/handle.

Keep an eye on the rear deck mount perches(?) where they mount to the deck. Mine cracked there, had the boy weld the cracked one and also put some reinforcement beads on the other one.
