I’ve been keeping an eye out for a decent used 2 or3 stage compressor to run a blast cabinet. Found this 1984 Dayton 3Z960 right in my neighborhood. It’s only 3 HP but seems very heavy duty/commercial. Guy wants $1000. Seems a little high. Anyone know what kind of output this thing might be capable of? It has been discontinued, obviously, so specs have been hard2CD324DF-D175-4D16-AC1E-7D0DBC8E6909.jpeg to find.E15CB590-64B3-45E9-B289-DF806521A2D0.jpeg19FD3670-CB97-44FD-9667-EAE4E6FF6E03.jpeg9181F6C1-9BCB-42B5-8433-EC6FA6214766.jpegED3AA69E-FFA3-41F6-90D3-A1FFFACB46DE.jpeg

How many gallons?

Looks like $3-400 to me.

Unless there are service records dating back 40yrs... $500

That appears to be a Meiji pump. They are made in Japan and Grainger imported them for a few years. Other than the ones Grainger imported, they have no presence in the US to my knowledge, and zero parts availability. Meiji is still in business and makes an extensive line of compressors, but they apparently have no interest in marketing in the US.

I've got a 3 cylinder 10hp one w/ 120 gal tank in my business shop. I got it, with a blown head gasket, in exchange for a couple hours of machine work. That's when I found out no parts were available. The original blown gasket had been replaced with one cut from a sheet of thin aluminum and it wasn't actually blown but rather just wouldn't seal as it was on the high pressure cylinder. I made one from gasket material used on high pressure steam lines, and so far it has held for 20+ years.

Meiji makes a high quality pump, but the lack of parts strongly affects the value here. If I could observe it running and time the fill to determine that the pump isn't worn out, I'd be in the $300 to $400 range tops.

I'd wonder if it's a good 37 year old air compressor, why is the guy selling it? :dunno:
If that were the case you should never buy anything used...

I do agree it is steep for price, and would be looking for a 5hp unit for that, but that's all depending on your area.

It's hard to argue with your logic, but I'll give it a try.

An air compressor produces compressed air. That's it. After 37 years, even though it's working perfect, does someone just decide they are tired of it and want to get rid of it? :dunno: :

Agree maybe it was the three grand asking price. If it was 800 bucks and assuming the tank was not rusted, sure, why not?

Absolutely. With how good cordless tools are today, most people have no need for a large compressor anymore. A small, portage will easily inflate tires or run an air nailer

Medical conditions, retiring, downsizing living spaces, moving...who knows really it's all speculating until you go there to see it.

Yeah, the owner died. His son is selling/consolidating his and his dad’s stuff. It’s big and a pain to move.

And thanks a bunch metlmunchr, that’s excellent info. Looks like I’ll be bursting someone’s bubble. Or just not buying it.
