Cut and welded two pieces of 35"bed frame to my Generator Cart project.

Took the ZRX off the rear stand.
Removed the ZRX spool doodads.
Bolted on the ZX11 pads.
Offered up the stand to the rear of the ZX11
Got it all lined up & lifted the bike.

No problems....

Took the ZX off the rear stand.
Couldn't get the damn thing out past the brake caliper & rear sprocket.
Loosen bolts on pads, slid pads outwards.
Remove stand.

WTF? It went IN without any clearance/interference issues, couldn't get the damn thing OUT again.

Put it back together and put it up again. Watch yourself, or film yourself, putting it up. Exactly reverse what you did. Bet you'll find there's a little jog or jiggle, or positional thing you do putting it on that you didn't do pulling it off. I've been to this well soo many times it's not funny.

May have sorted the intermittent starter issue. Thought it was a starter solenoid issue, discovered an idiot owner issue. Bizarre part was it only clicked & failed to turn over when someone was stood right there. It fired up just fine when there were no witnesses..

When I bought the bike back on July 29th I'd fitted a new battery for the seller. I didn't know then how easy it was to get the tank off & worked with it just propped up a few inches. Owing to that, I hadn't tightened the terminals as well as I should have.... then forgot about it.
Today I used a 10mm socket on the battery screws & tightened them quite a bit more (altho they weren't "loose").
Hopefully that sorts it (still need to put some vaseline or that purple battery post snot on the terminals). Going to be having a look inside the switch clusters while it's on the stands, also drop the side fairings again. May pull the upper fairing as there's some clean up to do in there & some hardware that needs sorting.

Well now it's really spread all over the garage... Dropped one damn nut inside the upper fairing, but that fell out when I pulled it off. Got a whole bunch more hardware to change out & more clean up to do now. Entire airbox is coming off tomorrow.

It other news:
1) It's going to take two people to get this thing up on the front stand
2) I now know which fastener is the last one to remove when pulling the upper fairing.... & it wasn't the one I thought it might be.

I know the frame is sort of a girdle on that one, but there's no way to fabricate 4 little extensions or a couple saddles to find some hard-ish points under there? The bottom of the burg is all plastic and exhausts, but I made up some bolt on extensions that reach up through the mess to find the bike. Which reminds me that I need to dig those out sooner than later, cause I'm coming due for tires. Hope they didn't get recycled.

That would probably work, but I'd still need to be close enough to push down on the end of the stand with my foot.
I'm going to try putting a floor jack under the exhaust collector, using that to lift it to get the front stand where it needs to be & then lower the jack. I'll be doing that when my former B-i-L is here later just in case it all starts to go pear shaped. I have a 5 or 6in round rubber pad for the cup on the jack which will help spread the load... I'm reliably informed it can be jacked under the collector.

They don't come magically able to lift your specific load. What you do is make and bolt on extensions/risers/adapters to the top rails to let it reach the appropriate parts of the bike. It's what I do to lift mine. People who lift by the exhaust are, well, insufficient.

Heard the wife go out to the shop... then back in. Then banging in the son's room.... then heard her go back out to the shop and back in. Heard a drill. Then more banging. Then more curse words...

Decided to take a break from work to go see what she was doing.

She was trying to mount wall anchors in the drywall to re-hang the remote for the son's ceiling fan.

She had the right idea, but was using a drill bit that was 4 sizes too small. I showed her what to use on the anchor to gauge what size bit she needed. Then I went back to work. Few minutes later... drill goes off. Then the driver. Then an, "I did it!" from the other room.

I'm sure she would have gotten there eventually, but based on the number of scrunched wall anchors sitting on the floor, I might have ran out of anchors before she found the correct size drill bit.

Finally got around to “hopefully it’s fixed” on the FASS fuel pump on the Cummins.


It has always had a slow seep. Ever so slightly slow. I’ve checked the connections, checked the filters. But it was always moist everywhere, so no way to track where it was coming from. The highest moist mark was nowhere near a place that could leak.

Finally just pulled all the connections, cleaned everything well, new thread sealant, and reassemble.

Went for a spin, and everything was still dry. Hopefully it’s done leaking! I’ll know in a few days!

I looked at my oil filter on the Explorer. It was dry - no oil drops on it!

OK - back story - with a twist.

5000 miles ago I changed the oil and after that I started getting very small drops on the floor. I traced it back to the filter - it would always have a very small drop just waiting to fall at the low point on the filter. So I cleaned it up and tightened it a little. That didn't help. So it's possible the gasket for the oil filter housing is leaking now but that's a pain to change and it's not leaking very much so I let it go with a piece of cardboard under it in the garage. It's also possible the oil filter had a tiny hole in it at the top seam. I was hoping for the filter scenario.

So today it's dry so that proves that it was the filter all along because surely by now even a slow leak would have shown up.
Then I realized that I've been working from home since I changed the oil - a period of almost one month shy 4 days. When I checked the mileage I realized that I have only put 114 miles on it since I changed the oil.

So I can't really call it yet.

Ten years ago my son and grandson decided to help me out and spray paint the man door for my shop a medium green that turned out to puke green, I ended up later just getting some exterior latex paint that match the trim on the house and brushed painted. I never said a word about the fact that a layer of cardboard under the door would have prevented the green paint overspray on the cement. Today I was going thru my spray cabinet and was tossing out non functioning cans and I had a half can of spray on paint stripper. I am next to the garbage can and that half can I look down to see if the can still sprays. It did so I decided to use up the can and then toss it in the garbage. The floor was the victim of the spray paint stripper. Since it was only a half can I did not get to far but it did peel up remarkable well the over spray. Oh yeah outside the door those dang birds decided to **** under the carport.

Off to Home Cheapo & bought a quart of Jasco.

Since when did it cost FIFTY ******** DOLLARS for a gallon of paint stripper?? I think the last gallon I bought was about $12 (it's been a while)

Anywho, plan was to wait until the wheels were off for news tires... decided to "try a small area"... That turned into doing one side of the rear wheel. First pass removed most of the CC. Rest of the project WILL wait until the wheels are off the bike as it's 107deg here today.

Most of what looks like very small pieces of clear coat are actually marks in the metal where the clear coat had failed. Probably going to buy a cheap wheel balance stand to make finishing the project easier.

yep, noticed that myself recently. Terrible prices all around, stains, strippers, paints. Seems a quart of anything is also priced at about 40-45% the cost of a gallon of anything, too.

I was there for acetone, $11/qt, and a gallon was "only" $23.

It's like the bad old days of TV repair, where the repairs always seem to be priced just under half the cost of a new replacement.


I just paid $31 for a gallon of interior satin paint, too. The 5gal was exactly 5x the price, too. No volume cost savings like there used to be.

One other random price check - AND example of potential stupidity - HomeDepot had white gas for $11/gal. And for some reason there were stacks of it in the lighting aisle. All those lovely ignition sources + mountain of flammable liquid. Sitting side by side waiting for someone unstable with poor impulse control.

I added a new wireless access point in the cottage to deal with some WiFi dead zones, and I tested it in the garage (which is 50 feet from the house). I get reception 2/3 of the way back, so in theory could use internet on the front workbench. Optimizing placement of the access point is for another day, after we upgrade internet service (my dream in technicolor as I await fibre to be connected).
