So today was a City Wide garage sale in the next town north, home of
@PacificaVette . It’s an interesting city, sometime back around 1960, 7 little towns, each isolated by being in a canyon like area, joined up to become one city, connected by Highway One. As you move from area to area, you have to jump out on Hwy 1, then go back inland.
So today started out with the official map, but our first stop was a hoarder’s house at the far north, who is moving to AZ. They’d already taken out 16 1 ton van and trailer loads down there. Found a few interesting goodies, then as I was leaving a side room, I saw a vise hiding behind a stack of totes full of moving blankets. Asked about it, he wanted more than I was willing, I countered at 40%, and he accepted. He hadn’t planned on selling, but had a 4” Chinese in the downstairs room, and a 5” rotating Olympia outside already sold. Took a few minutes to get it off, as they had a mix of hex, square nuts and carriage bolts. It’s a Craftsman 51871, so 40# of goodness, 5-1/2” jaws.
Here's the rest of the haul, 2 truck mirror brackets to be repurposed to Halogen light handles, 2x Jorgensen 3712 clamps, Stanley 1-3/4" blade and lever cap, bushing punch?, key blanks, DuroChrome DOE, 3 chisels, Starrett Extendable divider, Brown and Sharpe Std Wire Gauge,
The next few stops were targeted around the N-S movement, focused on those listing tools. Tried to loop thru the highest density of tools, scored a few boxes w tools in them, and 11 squares of garage floor cushioning. The orange box, and some of the goodies I started to pull out, including Barcalo, Plomb, Thorsen, Williams, Proto, Par-X, Diamalloy, before he told me take the whole box for $3. The Indestro box for $2 wasn't bad, pleased to see some original paint to try to match inside. The excess orange stuff will go out at my garage sale.
Cigar box for $2, needs veneer repair, casters for $2, bolts from the vise, spinner, new Hyde knives, a nail nipper with Bernard heritage, adn Klein wire strippers.
The next big grab was at the inland end of the southernmost loop, from a couple prepping to move north to Portland to be near their adult child. Some fun stuff in the driveway, but nothing I needed. Almost fell for a Meteor ignition wrench set, til I saw the name. They Also said anything in the garage with a price tag was fair game as well. Saw nothing I needed, but there was a monster red vise on the bench, with a replaced handle made of pipe. After a few minutes of hemming and hawing, I accepted their price, and made plans to get it out. His son had reserved some of the tools, but his 1/2” set didn’t have any extensions with it. So he grabbed an 18” off the sale table, which almost hit the bottom of the cabinet. My biggest traveling socket was a 3/4”, and we needed a 15/16”, so we were stuck using his. I tried to separate the dynamic, it pulled to the end of the travel, but I couldn’t get a grip to break it free, or push it back in. So we pulled it off with dynamic right on the edge of falling out. Told him I was worried about carrying the weight to the truck. He said I carried it here, it’s only about 75#, but I was a lot younger. So we carefully extracted it, I carried it to the truck, tied it down, and went on our way. BTW, it’s 125#, Reed 106, with 1912 patent date, and the meatball in front
The final stop of interest had a bunch of pricey stuff on top of the tables, but a box of old dirty stuff under the table. First grab was a Herbrand 1/2” ratchet, so I dug in deeper. Spent about 10 minutes digging while the sellers ignored me. Don’t know how much they moved, but I was happy. Left some imported stuff and modern OK stuff. On top of the tables was expensive electrician stuff. Dirty pile of tools, DI on left, Stlllson wrench by Howorth, Standard 4" clamp, NAPA, Armstrong, SK and Craftsman Sockets, 2 P&C deeps, Herbrand ratchet, 2x Corona clippers.
All in all a good day on Value for the price.
