IMO -- there is no worse way to light a space than random recessed.
Code obviously .... have to get into a room if it is dark in a safe manner.A single switched outlet in a room with no overhead lights is worse... way worse.

My living rooms are used --- filtered lighting from lamps when nothing else is planned for.
For a bit I use these. They work like a charm. Great for fishing in new outlets on a main floor to basement as well.Drilling through the joists is why I posted about recommendations on 1/4 bit extensions that's also part of why I was thinking more than 4 lights...if I add some in the middle, I get another access point instead of having to drill across 8' of joists.
Yeah, that's the one I have. I find it will tear the hell out of anything it grabs and if it gets caught on a nail, it really winds up the shaft. I use it when I have to, but can't for this either way due to the proximity to the wallsI've done a few of these drilling and fishing installations with recessed cans. There's a bit of luck involved for sure. I always inform the client of the potential to hit electrical wiring, especially if they are solid floor joists versus TJI's. TJI's you just aim for the middle of the joist as most electricians wont staple a cable there. If I suspect there that there will be water lines in my path I cut small patchable inspection holes on each side of the joist if the client is willing.

That assumes you have a lamp and you have it plugged in. Nothing worse than a 400sqft room with a 60w lamp in the corner.
That setup (no overhead lighting) is the most irritating and worst setup I have experienced. I want a room to have a switch that lights it up, the whole room. I want to be able to do it if it's devoid of furniture or packed full like a hoarder. It doesn't need to be workshop level bright, but the entire room should be lit.
