They did the early "economy line" in a forest green. I had a 0000 with remnants that got sent to a buddy.

Stationary - 0000, 100, 200, 300 etc.
swivel base models had a "2" in front of those numbers... 2000, 2100, 2200, 2300,

I collect clamp on vises. Here is a small one I just found and some others in that style.
Collection is unorganized right now unfortunately.

Very nice! Is that the original color?
It's not the original color. But close, it really close to the craftsman color. It's called rustoleum hammered Verdi Green. Really pops with some automotive clear and is pretty durable after a quick.cure in thr oven.

Got lucky this past Thursday on an American Scale "Red Seal" 25. Started cleaning it up and couldn't stop, all by hand using a 2" putty knife, machinist pick and a wire brush. Thought about painting it, it's still a possibility someday, but decided to let the patina and original character show. She has a broken and very nicely repaired foot, missing pipe jaws but other than that in perfect condition. Fluid Film coated.

6-inch jaws, 196 pounds of American metal.

How many beers does it take to get a vise that clean!?!

I have tried to get some of that Verde Green, the only one I found was at a garage sale and only half full.
None of the stores on the west coast seem to carry it.

Picked up this old 3.5" vise today. I think its a Parker, but has no ID marks on it that I can find? The jaw shape is identical to my Parker, I think this one's older? Guy said it was his grandfathers, and the guy was probably late 40's? any idea on age/model?

having issues with photo upload, it seems to randomly be failing. looks like most made it thru. might also be pics of the 10" Craftsman made in Japan wood vise, but i think the pics failed to upload

Made a little more progress on the Wilton C0 today.

When I went to measure for the end cap, I was getting different measurements on my calipers. Some were 1.64, some were 1.66, etc. I hunted down 2 Dorman expansion plugs and bought a 1.643 and 1.67 OD.

The 1.643 could be made to work, if the OD were flared out a little. I went with the 1.67 (part number 555-110) for my vise, however.

Really nice find! I have the same vise and have identified it as a pre-1867 Charles Parker no. 1 parallel vise, based on patent and catalog data. It's surprising to me that there are as many examples of these super early Parkers, still in good condition.

Here's a GJ link to a really good thread with some amazing and very old Charles Parker vises.

hot damn, that's way older than I imagined. I'll have to gently clean it up then. Bought it in a lot for $80 with the plan to flip it to recoup my $$ and wind up with the other stuff free. Gonna read that now during lunch

edit: looks JUST like yours in post #74

Staying on topic, the Charles Parker "Hall's Patent" vises seem to be on many vise collectors bucket list these days, including my own.

Congratulations to the winner, I shared the desire to own this vise. However, your pockets are much deeper than mine.

Here is a recent vise purchase that I mentioned on the GS thread. It's a small Boley & Leinen #4967 watchmaker's vise, in really nice shape, complete with dovetail slide. It has the "4967" model number on it in its usual place. It has 1 3/4" jaws and opens 1 1/2" before the cylinder housing the screw ends (practical limit). It weighs 2 1/2 lbs.

I finally got around to organizing my smaller Reed vise collection and arranging them on one shelving unit. The top two shelves are 2” and 2-1/2” models. The shelves below have mostly 3” models with larger vises on the floor. Reed made first quality American vises and I’m proud to have them in my collection.

It's interesting how strong such a dovetail is compared to traditional vises with a fixed rear jaw. On the cheaper german style dovetail vises, I only ever saw them break off the fixed jaw, really hard to damage those guides even though they seem minimal. Guess that's also a big reason why mills and lathes use them.

Yeah I went with a hunter green, I’m not sure I like it though it is a little lighter than I wanted but it was the darkest I could find. I will post some pics tomorrow
This is the green it got after the paint dried it was a little darker. I think it will do, now to put it back together and build a beefy stand for it.CB524E7F-7325-4C9E-9173-E2C07749EE8A.jpegC1A58842-6439-4AD1-930F-4662396B8441.jpeg

hi Fred how do you know you have a boley, does that serial number identify it?, I have a very early one that has No stamps at all, usually boley stamped into the top of the front jaw, very faint, there are many many copies though so can make it very difficult to identify the really early ones,
your rear casting seems a little rough at the rear, a boley was the highest class of vice of this type, it was a very expensive item in the day and everything should be perfect.
is the anvil a screw in type?, if so what is the thread pitch

Anvil is screw in type. I measured 26 TPI. Cosmetic casting is not perfect, but it operates as smoothly and tightly as any vise I have. PM me if other questions, or you just want to compare specs.

Made some progress getting the paint off. I thought the simple green would melt it away……………uh, no! Took a lot of elbow grease to get it to this stage. That is some stubborn paint and I am sure there were several coats. I used a hand wire brush, lots of different grits of sand paper and some tools from my dremel. I think it is cleaning up nicely. I am going to leave it bare metal, I love the look and all the years of use. When I am done I will put on some boiled linseed oil as suggested. Any tips or observations are welcome.

I picked up this little baby today. Lightly used with most of it's original paint intact. Smooth jaws without blemish. I didn't know these came with smooth jaws? They look right. Also came with the Powrarm. I had picked up a Wilton 347J clamp at a junk shop a few weeks back for a buck and finaly got to try it out on a Powrarm Jr. Fits great and locks it down very nice. I am curious about the bench clamp. It is well marked and even has "Wilton Perma Pad" stamped around the rim of the screw swivel pad which surprised me. Slide date on the vise is 6/68. A few pics. Ed.

A couple pics I pulled online that show the powrarm base clamp and explain the perma pad swivel feature.

Speaking of clean examples I found this truly NOS Starrett vise no 925, it has 5” jaws and weighs in at 103 lbs. The seller took it out of the box to take photos of it but it spent its life wrapped in cardboard. I’m pretty sure the vise has never been cranked open and the base is in the original shipping position.383e618efad59229d1e94ac597af691b.jpgdd77424459ae73e6ce82a56ae5449782.jpg0b89f6e75e986baed29785885fbad4a2.jpgfa8ffdc94ce1a616fe8e0867d0ab2450.jpg203c12b3e8709731b60db0015375d264.jpgeecd987ea0a44efe8f0ce9d3bd034053.jpg

Cool Color, looks like granite. Has anyone been able to match that paint well?

Cretedog, that is a unique Hollands. What is the purpose of the offset?

Vise, on that Craftsman 5241, so the jaws rotate, and the shaft remains fixed? How exactly does the jaws lock down? This has to be one of the most unique Craftsman vises I have seen.

Will McRay, nice Yost 34C.

Finished my Wilton C-0 rebuild.

Looks like they put a socket head cap screw in to pull the crack together before welding or brazing. Not worth the asking price IMHO in that condition.

How did I do? It could use one jaw but really it doesn't affect it but for aesthetics only starreet 925 I gave $75 for it.

Guy is asking $3000 for the vise and can’t be bothered to post more than 1 photo. One of my pet peeves with CL ads. Also strategic placement of the can obscuring the repaired slide. :headshake
