Hey Matt,
I re-did a Dayton grinder and my labels are in poor condition. Can you please take a look at the attached and let me know what you might be able to do? I'd really like the main motor label and on/off switch label re-done in aluminum. I did manage to save them in the resto but they detract. Also, the top safety sticker would be a bonus or really any age appropriate "PUT ON YOUR GLASSES" style label would be great...I need the reminder :)

Original photo:IMG_0479[1].JPG

After resto:

IMG_0502[1].JPG

Additionally, I had some Baldor vertical vinyl stickers made for my sander. The creator was kind enough to send me some additional color options so, I can pass these along if anyone can use! White or some shades of blue....

I can make these, but need some measurements. Ideally a flatbed scan of each label. For the warning label, do you know the full text of the label? Its hard to make out all the wording from the photo.

These are single color so I can use a different technique to print on metal which involves a PVC free mask applied to an aluminum plate, then using a laser to burn away the areas that get painted, then paint, then pull off the mask. That is a lot more durable than digital printing on metal (the UV inks used are not fully scratch proof), and allows me to stamp the data with a punch.

Is it just an artifact of the digital photo, or does the Baldor sticker have some waviness in the cut line?

It’s the contour on the cast iron I think combined with the angle. Few pics below that maybe you can work from ? I’m fine with focusing on this main label. It’s the focal point!
It is 4” wide x 2” tall. You may be able to approximate the radius with the scale but I’m going to say it’s basically semi circular on the edges. That size would be fine. Let me know what you think 🤔

The replacement plate showed up today. Looks fantastic. The resto project on my drill press had stalled a few weeks ago. This got me motivated to get moving on it again. Thanks Matt!!

Some reproduction labels I made for a member

Before:

D535A451-E1B5-49E9-AEBB-0B0936BEE200.jpeg
After:

D77F0B39-1D96-4132-A74B-9F7E5BC0E429.jpeg

The Rockwell was especially tricky as the layout washed off when the paint was removed. So had to find examples online of similar models and draw as best as I could figure out. Hopefully the proportions of the voltage wiring diagram is correct.

Craftsman 115.6824 1/2 HP motor label

Before:

After:
027D4A8D-FB26-4FF1-B814-CB244DFC5F2E.jpeg

This was laser engraved on anodized aluminum then stamped with 3/32” data. Ended up only putting the 60hz RPM on the label due to lack of space to fit both.

Anodized aluminum labels have a nice satin finish and are very durable. Usually I make these of 0.025” thick aluminum but I had some 0.040” in stock and used that.

“Industrial Textile Supply Company” dealer label for Rockwell 127-3549. Printed on clear, laminated and applied to aluminum.

This one gave me some trouble to register the red and black.

Any chance I could commission you to make a couple badges for a Radial Arm Saw I'm restoring out of Brass? If brass is not an option, aluminum works too!

My badges are 1.125"X4.75" - the file attached might be slightly different ratio. I would not need holes for the rivets as my saw doesn't have drilled holes (existing badges were glued on). Let me know if you're interested and the cost - thanks!

Just another example of Matt’s work. This is the label on a motor from a 6x42 belt disc sander rebuild I did back in June of 2021.

Here they are in brass. The dimensions are 4-3/4” x 1-1/4” which is slightly different from what you measured but this was the size needed to match the proportions of the supplied photos.

Laser etched on glossy black lacquered brass (glossyness makes it a bit hard to photograph)

Made without rivet holes as requested since your saw didn’t have any holes drilled.

A beat up old sticker on a newly restored grinder makes it look bad. Many restorations require that the label be removed (and destroyed in the process) to repaint. When I restore a grinder I go all out - sandblast, paint, new bearings, replace cord, replace rubber feet, etc. I want my old grinders to have no problem lasting another 20 (or 40) years of heavy use before they look worn out.

Besides the old label my restorations look new.

Sometimes I need to remove the old label to sand and paint and sometimes the old label is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Here is a recent Baldor 3/4 HP from 1978 that I picked up for $200 a few months ago and is undergoing a restoration.

fac1484c11b064615569162a348a94b6.jpg

Solid grinder but it was heavily used and ready for a full restoration. This requires that I remove all the old stickers and sand blast it.

09572bd91dba4208cdfe100c2c9b96eb.jpg

Here it is partially restored. Only new parts are the bolts to attach to the stand, the bolts to attach the polycarbonate sheets and the new labels. I still need to attach nameplate and switch cover which I ordered new from Baldor.

Baldor also sells the adhesive labels but they are overpriced in my opinion so I made them myself. And besides, Baldor won't sell the UL label.

These labels were drawn on the computer using the old label as a template. I scanned the old label in on the office copy machine then used vector based drawing tools to make a perfect replica. These labels are within 0.01" of original.

I print them on silver or white high performance adhesive vinyl using solvent inks then machine cut them to size (the cutter automatically rounds the corners). The hard part is creating the electronic version of the label. It can take an hour or two for complex ones. The printing and cutting take just a few minutes.

It's actually no more effort to print out 8 then I have a few extras in case I mess up.

5d22e0fecbaa317c31239670a2543285.jpg

These are unlaminated so they are damaged with alcohol based solvents but are water and light resistant. For more durable labels I add a high performance clear laminate prior to machine cutting. That does complicate the cutting process as the machine needs to re-orient the print origin but then the labels are impervious to chemicals.

Here's one I did for a craftsman grinder last year (this is the spare one that didn't end up getting used). This one took about 90 mins to draw.

bfb9a98fd70bfb28f2c856333323bcc9.jpg

And some for another machine I'm restoring

d273ae87667072b10f7438abd3095dca.jpg

I use professional sign making software to do the layout (FlexiSIGN) which allows for fast and accurate drawing in vector format and can import and export EPS and PDF files.

All these labels (except the yellow/black ones) are extras that I don't need anymore. If you can use a any let me know and PM me your address and I'll send them.

I may regret saying this but I will also make any adhesive label for a grinder for free (at least until I get overwhelmed). If you need one post up a photo and I'll let you know of that is one I can make.
I recently restored my Baldor M109/385 grinder. It looks really nice now. The data tag and Shield decals were reasonable shape and I kept them as is. However the Baldor label on the pedestal was attached crooked and was in pitiful shape. I scraped it off with a razor blade before sanding the pedestal clean. I see you have made one for your pedestal. I would very much like to replace mine as well. Could you please contact me with details if you could make one for me? TIA

Is this image clear enough to create a duplicate? A single voltage 3 phase 200V grinder is not as common as the 230/460V 3 phase, or 115/230V single phase models . For those who don't know, 200V is for use on a 208V system.

When I bought my grinder the tag was missing, it came from a school in Truckee, CA.

This is my first post on here, it was suggested to me and linked from the HAMB. Could you reproduce this one? It’s adhesive backed foil similar to the Craftsman grinder tag in post 494. I don’t need the stamped numbers, just the blank sticker. Thanks.

I can make this. Any chance you can get a flatbed scan of it that I can use as a template for size and position?

Hi Matt, thanks for the response. I’m not sure what a flatbed scan is but I removed my tag and put it on a piece of aluminum to preserve it. The picture that I posted was a similar one from the HAMB, much more complete. Mine’s pretty beat up but I can photograph it and include scales for size if that works?
Thanks again.
Bob

Made a perfect vector version then printed and applied to a sheet of aluminum that was then filed to exact dimensions.

Hi Matt, very nice reproductions, correct fonts and WOS (weight of stroke) for all of your work, exactly as per the originals. I make and sell a range of reproduction motorcycle stickers and enjoy the challenge of a perfect reproduction, it helps that my back ground is a signwriter for the last 40 years, layout skills that were originally done by hand are now done so much easier on a computer.

I used a high gloss polycarbonate lamination. Very durable and has a nice gloss finish.
