Guys, many of you get fantastic results cleaning up your tool finds. I’m curious. Have any of you tried this ultrasonic cleaner with evaporust or metal rescue in it and if so what were your results?

I'm very happy with my "Vevor" branded ultrasonic cleaner off of Aliexpress. It is 3l and costed about the same I think. However, the thing that made me decide on it is that it is all "manual". Most of these cleaners use some digital display and keypads and whatever... Mine just has two knobs, one's a thermostat for the heater and the other is a mechanical timer for turning on the ultrasound - and nothing else.

I had a HF brand ultrasonic that looked like that probably 10-15 years ago, which I used for cleaning tools from the flea market for selling online. It was a fun little hobby. I just used whatever degreaser I had on hand, like the stuff from the dollar store, and sometimes some dish soap. The tools always came out very clean if you left them in there long enough. The bummer for me is that the machine didn't last very long before dying. I ended up buying a more expensive and large unit, I think Crest brand.

You can get a lot more life out of an ultrasonic cleaner if you fill it with DI water, and then just put whatever you are cleaning in a zip lock with the specific cleaning fluid. Give the cheapie cleaners a bit more life since they never seem to hold up to real cleaning chemicals very long.

My cheap cleaner has a stainless steel pan, so can the content of it really affect how long it will work?

The only reason you might get more life out of it because it won't work as well with DI water compared to tap water.

Why is that? The water is just to transmit the sonic vibration, the extra sediment in tap water shouldn't make a difference

Not exactly sure but it's a known fact that DI water is harder to cavitate than tap water. Some surfactant will certainly help with both though, you should always use some soap to lower the surface tension of the water whether you are using a double boiler setup or not.

If you google it, and look at the big mfg names, they give different reasons. A few sites say it doesn’t matter, others say DI is a sponge, natural solvent, etc

I know that DI water has a corrosive effect, I had a sealed vial on my desk for years that had a ring at the air liquid interface caused by the water attacking the glass.

Correct. I meant more for the flea market find that you want to clean up and get back to decent shape so that you can wipe them down when they get you dirty! Lol.

Ultrasonic cleaner that has a heater & citric acid powder in the water works very fast. Speeds up the process so much
