For all the future readers out there that might be reading this.

If your pinned down to a modern Chamberlain GDO @dave*99 could be be entirely correct. reasoning sounds well thought out.

Since we are down the rabbit hole.

My thoughts are that no data is carried out on the physical button. Intercepting and extending it would have zero affect on data being passed from the controller on he PCB. Lets assume we were extending the signal.... PWM would not care unless you get the length out of hand. Unneeded in typical 2 car distances but, with a low cap cable Id guess you could go a really long way. Wouldn't it be a fun project to design a ckt that could intercept the signal and either pass it thru or modify it as needed depending on an input state? I Wonder if an audrino could do it? If you designed it to support multiple door stations that would be a bonus.

I still don't love the idea telling someone to create a line voltage mod (at least someone who would not know already how to do it themselves)

I use a pair of vise-grips to keep my doors from being accidentally opened. :dunno:

The physical lock button is connected to a high impedance input on the microcontroller. Extending wire to this high impedance terminal could subject the control panel micro to radio frequency interference. So extending this potentially problematic. There is no PWM signal here - just a logic state. And again - it's a 2 second depress to signal the system to go lock or unlock of the radio remotes. So once you extend this wire, what do you propose to connect to it?

As for where PWM communication does exist---- it's on the 2 wire connection between the control panel and the motor..... that is not a problem. Every installation has a long wire in that spot. It properly carries the PWM signal. The circuitry at both the control panel and the motor unit are properly filtered to eliminate RFI.

As for the vice grip solution---- maybe. But the OP has 4 kids and that's 4x10 fingers. So you would need 40 pairs of vice grips to clamp each finger rendering it unable to press the GDO button. Good news is that many GJ folks have 40 pairs of vice grips.

A single pair on the track is a lot easier, but I like where your head is at. The real question is to use American made or imports

Might be a good opportunity to check the pressure settings on the door opener. You should be able to adjust how hard it pushes before reversing and you may be able to get it soft enough that damage isn't a big concern depending on what part of the door is going to contact the car
A good idea for sure but even light contact will scratch the hell out of the paint if it just skims across the roof.

Hopefully I'm not retracing previous replies, but does your garage door opener have a "Vacation Mode" or "Lock" feature? The Genie door opener at my house has an extra button on the wall unit that locks and disables the remote control function on the receiver.
It's fairly easy to use. To enable/disable it, you just have to press the lock button on the wall unit for 3 seconds.

Its amazing that someone aside from the OP could be so interested in arguing a basic, general idea using their own specific situation and equipment. Especially one that appears to be unlikely to be implemented and you dont know what equipment this tread was created under. I bet your a hoot at the company Xmas party.

I never said my idea was practical or the best. Just offering ideas But, If your really looking for someone to keep poking the bear....

You can't say for certain that extending the logic circuit would impart issue. Today its just speculation. Maybe you can put together an example? Most home garages are not that big. In my simple and limited experience creating and deploying a generator annunciator panel I have not seen where this has caused issue. I used an off the shelf Arduino and from memory I believe 100K current limiting resistor. Digital I/O is in the same conduit as the 240V over 14ga THHN wire. Not a problem.

Unicorn magic? Vice grips swinging like a pendulum inside a 55 gallon drum filled with OG Aunt Jemima pancake nectar?

My magic 8 ball (98% correct 12% of the time) says that all 4 children are not circus performers and cant jump over 6' in the air. 1 pair of grips will be adequate if placed high enough on the door. If your still worried maybe we can discuss electrifying them with a neon transformer?

I'd interrupt the 120V and skip all this controller/arduino/lock button interface stuff entirely. But hey, I like to keep things simple.
