I like the way you think. I not going to use OSB or particle board, though it is a nice alternative for the price. I was looking at the poplar because of the price, but I don't have any experience with it, whether how durable it is and if I can stain it.

I am getting ready to do my second Devoe floor this weekend. I am going to add anti-skid. Do I mix the anti-skid in with the second coat of paint, or do I spread it on top like I do the flakes? Any suggestions or tips?
