Option for a nice spot to park a vehicle in the yard

Down here, where pipeline work is super common, we can get used 8'×16' mud mats for about $100. They are laminated out of 3 layers of 2×6 rough cut hardwood, super handy to do what you did. But these weight about 3200 lbs a piece, so can be a little tricky to move around and place. Sent from...

Should I get a small band saw, or hand plasma for shop use?

Probably not, an abrasive saw turns way too fast for a cold saw blade.

Need Tips for how to make my shop AWESOME!

I don't like wrenches on the wall. I prefer a midsized roll around for the stuff I know ill use, with those plastic horizontal wrench organizers. That way I have all the basics with me and since it rolls, I have mobility throughout the shop. Don't have to walk all the way across the shop for...

    Welder advice

Youll learn better technique by starting with stick. I, and countless others, started with the ubiquitous buzzbox. Simple and cheap. Now my main machine is a 500 amp engine drive miller and I'm gonna be getting a heavy mig soon. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk

Tree Pushing and Dirt Work Advice Needed

Your gonna want to get as many roots out from under the pad as possible. They will caused settling over time as they roots deconpose. No harm in compacting in smaller lifts, only thing that matters is the compaction test. 12" is a big lift. If your actually gonna do one. How big is your...

Tree Pushing and Dirt Work Advice Needed

While this is pretty common, you shouldn't use tracked equipment to compact. While A narrow track machine can have a reasonably high ground preasure, a loaded dump truck will have more. And a real compactor will be faster, neater and more consistent than either of those.

Tree Pushing and Dirt Work Advice Needed

With no experience it will assuredly take more time. Make doubly sure this machine has a ROPS and forestry gaurd. You dont want to get squashed because you pushed the wrong way on a widow maker. I had 5 acres of heavy brush and small tress cleared with a Deere 250G and a thumb. Took a day...

    Socket Question

Its also to aid in machining. Sqaure corners are more complex to manufacture and more expensive.

New Slides for Old Matco Bottom?

Got a Matco MB-940 top and bottom, the top is perfect, the bottom is not. Probably had way too much weight in the drawers at one time, nearly all the slides on the bottom are close to totally shot. It's a good looking well made toolbox and I'd like to keep them together, but I need a box that...

Trades that require the least tools.

Pipeline welding isnt too tool intensive compared to a tool and die maker or heavy equipment field service mechanic.

Options for 300' run to to-be-built shop?

Google electrical wire size chart or calculator. 100A 240v at 300', I come up with 1/0 copper. I pulled 100' of 3/0 wire for my shop hook up. Straight line pull is easy, the turns are the hard parts. I found that instead of using a conduit 90, two 45 degree elbows put together to make a 90...

    Geotextile Fabric?

Makes a huge difference, even if your subase is weak. I have about a 12,000 sq ft yard with woven geofiber under it. Spread a layer of 4"-6" road base than a layer of 3/4"-1 1/2" fines to lock it all in place. Works nice and is able to support a 35,000lbs yard worklift on wet days. The...

    80x80 Pole Barn

Now that school is out, (my last final was the 10th, was my birthday as well, turned 20) trying to get some stuff done. Clutch job on the 430 is sort of done, clutch is put back together and tractor is one piece again, but I need to modify a linkage in the clutch pedal. The new pressure plate...

    80x80 Pole Barn

Yes, farming and machine shop are the plan. It'll be somewhat weird farming, using old slow two row equipment for the most part. Won't make a whole lot of money, but doing some weird small scale organic operation should have a high enough per acre yeild it pencils out. Also planning to put...
