Wood Chisels - General Use - Who Makes a Quality Product These Days?

Marples. I love my British made Marples chisels- nice wooden box and all. I've made it an iron clad rule to NEVER use them on iron (or steel, etc.). They are Wood Chisels. As a result, they still work like new 30 years or more down the road. The one thing I did wrong was get the less...

    Garage door rebuilding help

This is an overhead door, 4 panels, 8' wide, 8' high. I'm aware of the un-flat problems. This will be close enough - I couldn't use pressure treated because it's so wavy. Looked usable when it was still wet ... on drying, no dice. Fortunately Home Depot took them back, and I substituted...

    Garage door rebuilding help

Thanks - I staggered the cutters, and it's working smooth as silk. I think it's actually smoother than my router table. I'm aware of the need for dowels - big ones, 5/8". The old panel has pretty well come apart, but into large enough pieces it's easy to see how it was assembled. 5/8...

    Garage door rebuilding help

Thanks! Yes, I'm a big believer in safety equipment, table saw, router table, bandsaw, even the usually benign drill press. ... but it never hurts to be reminded.

    Garage door rebuilding help

I'm rebuilding a wooden garage door and have a question about my Shaper. I bought it at an estate sale quite some years ago and haven't had occasion to use it until now. I bought the proper cutters to cut the profiles on the door panels, but installing them on the shaper's spindle led me to a...

    defeat "smart charger" battery detection?

More data points. I hooked up a 12V 4Amp battery - like the ones used in alarm systems and suchlike - and the HF charger started right up. Unfortunately, its claimed 50A for engine starting was not enough to lift the garden tractor. I have another, older HF unit without the battery sensor...

    defeat "smart charger" battery detection?

Wow - so many different solutions, and all plausible! I know about the 50A engine start mode - just assumed it would also require battery. That's one (without battery sense) I have on hand - I'd just be really bummed if I made it go kaput because it's the one I use for my electrolysis tank.

    defeat "smart charger" battery detection?

I need an old-fashioned always-on battery charger. All the new ones I've seen have Battery Sensing - that is, they won't put out any voltage unless they are connected to a battery. Apparently all current chargers are made with this "feature". What I need it for is running an overhead hoist...

    Blue Crate Fix

File this under "not worth it fixes". I had this light-duty plastic crate that somehow got a corner knocked out of it. Should have just thrown it away, but in the heap of steel bits destined for the scrap yard I spied this paint thinner can and realized it was just the right size to make a...

Milwaukee cordless M12 drill trouble shooting

Re: battery contacts - I saw a couple of YT bits on this issue. The problem is the overheat terminal on the battery gets bent inward so it doesn't make contact with the drill. This makes the drill think the battery is overheated, so it won't work. I tried springing out the contact a little...

Milwaukee cordless M12 drill trouble shooting

Wow, the collective mind of GJ strikes again! The drill is over 2 years old, so it didnt' occur to me it might be under warranty. Thanks to Assassin100000, with an easy link to follow, I found out it has a 5 year warranty. So, off it goes to be fixed!

Milwaukee cordless M12 drill trouble shooting

I've looked over some of the tool gurus' offerings on the interntet, but nothing seems to address my problem. I have two of the smaller M12 battery powered Milwaukee drills, one a hammer-drill (Not to be confused with a rotary hammer!) and the other just a drill. Nice, compact units, fit well...

    Post up your Thorsen tools!

It's been quite a while since I've added to my VeeGee collection. I came across this 17mm HWI branded combo on EvilBay and though I already had one HWI, it's an SAE. This metric looked pretty nice so I pulled the trigger. I'm glad I did because the dang thing looks new. Just a few scuffs...
