Does insulation still work if it is stacked horizontally as opposed to vertically? I have studs that vary in distance apart from 16” to 24” and everything in between. I ran the numbers and installing 2” thick foam boards with an R-10 rating would cost me around $450 plus another $50 in foam...

With the 2” foam boards and the great stuff around the edges, there would still be a 1.5” gap between the foam and the wall panel. Would this still be okay? Thanks for the help.
