    New Driveway Bids

I live in NorCal, so prices are crazy. Here’s the skinny on my upcoming new driveway: Tear out existing three car driveway and widen by 10 feet. Total new pour at 41 x 47 or ~29 yards. 3/8” rebar 12” on center, colored, stamped, five 18” bands brushed, one 18” retaining wall, rebar, tapered...

    Tool Identification

My dad served in WW II, and he started and ran a long successful construction company when the war ended. He was a bit of a hoarder when it came to tools and he never got rid of anything. He died in 2009 and I’m still sorting through his tools. To that point, any idea what these presses were...

    Garage door springs

The door spring replacement company’s are running a racket. While the majority of the cost is paying for their expertise and knowledge, their hourly rate approaches Madison Avenue lawyers. When a spring breaks, they have us over a barrel and they go to town.

Broken water service line, 710,600 gallons of water used this billing period, (every 3 months)

I was also surprised when I rented a ditch witch trencher that looked very new and very expensive. They gave me a 2 minute lesson without starting or doing anything real and sent me on my way. I signed a long liability release that I’m sure protected them and wrecked me, but, in the end, the...

Broken water service line, 710,600 gallons of water used this billing period, (every 3 months)

I just read Oregon code. It very clearly says the plumbing must be installed by a licensed plumber. Trenching is not installation. Cutting asphalt is not installation. Backfilling a trench is not installation. Installation is installation. That’s it. And, by code, you don’t need galvanized. You...

I had a similar situation a decade or so back and a $5,000 quote from the plumber. I rented a trencher and a buddy and I had a 3’ deep, 60’ long trench done in maybe four hours. New 2” PVC water line and fittings and I was done for well under $1,000.

    Siding thoughts, please.

We are considering purchasing a new-to-us home in Southern Oregon. It was custom built in 2008 and is in excellent condition. The sellers are the original owners and have down sized to a retirement community. The front is stucco, and the sides and back are wrapped in what looks like concrete...

    Part help, please.

Four of these fasteners hold shut the doors on my cold air return hvac ducts. They are more than 30 years old and three are broken. I’ve been to three hardware stores with no luck at identifying. Any idea what they are called? Thank you.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Today in my garage I bled the brakes on my Ranger bass boat trailer. One of those PITA jobs that feels really good when it’s done.

What paint brands do you avoid

I avoid Behr. Just haven’t had good results with coverage. Sherwin Williams is top shelf and it’s sure priced accordingly.

Two 12 ft doors or One 16ft door on 34ft wide garage?

I’d go with the two 12’ doors. I currently have a 10’ door and a 9’ wide boat trailer. Getting it in is not that difficult but the tongue has to be centered to get it out. No way would I do a 10’ door again.
