I've build a number of torsion boxes over the years...with a number of different core materials and configurations (including cardboard honeycomb) with success.
From purely an empirical standpoint, a good core seems to require rigidity, be able to handle some compression in the perpendicular...
I made some "folding leg retainers" out of plywood.
My thought was that the metal tab on the leg would provide enough flex to move across the rigid retainer 'hump'...
Works pretty good.
Took some tweaking to make it hold...but none have broken yet...

Yea. There is an access door...however it is simply a hole framed with molding.

Hmm. Good question. I believe it is simply 2x4's, in a standard "fan post" configuration,..I don't remember seeing 2x6's on floor of ceiling..... based on memory. Not much room up there to move around.

I want to avoid simply installing racks and storage on the ceiling (plenty of headroom is important to me)...
The "Clamp Rack" is actually a towel rack my late Grandfather made for my mother...who gave to me. I decided to re-purpose it for sentimental reasons. I guess I will start a new thread for my renovation, and will show more detailed pic. If nothing less, it will keep me motivated!
