    Jeff's 40x80x12 Shop & Living Quarters

Great build; thanks for sharing. I'm about 5 or 6 months away from building a shop with a living space and was specifically looking for similar builds here. Do you have more details on the living space portion of the building?

    Garage with gabled roof

I know this isn't part of your question, but here's my opinion: If you plan to put in HVAC, it would be an oversight to use 2x4 studs in your walls. You'll pay slightly more now, but the savings on HVAC costs later should pay that back quickly.

Buying a work bench top ? Or make one ?

IKEA has "butcher block" wood countertops in the kitchen department. Similar to the Grizzly link above, but if there's an IKEA nearby, you can save on shipping.

Closing on a house with no HOA...wait there is an HOA....

I don' think you understand what an HOA is. To begin with, it's not required, and they don't "contradict your right to live free". That said, if you don't want to live by the rules of an HOA, don't move into a neighborhood with an HOA. Some HOAs charge dues, and use the money to collectively...

Feit Electric T8 LED Fixtures at Costco

LEDs don't dim the same way that incandescent lights do. You dim an incandescent by lowering the voltage. Lowering the voltage on an LED dims it *very slightly* then it just goes out. To correctly dim an LED, you need a "PWM" which switches the power on/off/on/off very quickly. So fast, that...

    Liftmaster opener not working

I say it's not the eye based on the opener working correctly when the door is not attached. The little sled that carries the door runs up and down with no problem, but when the little sled is attached to the door, it won't close.

    Liftmaster opener not working

The opener works just fine when the door is not attached. I'm really not sure how it can be an eye problem.

    Liftmaster opener not working

Any thoughts here would be appreciated. I have a liftmaster opener (chain drive) on a standard residential garage door. It's worked great for a year or so, but stopped working today. It will not close the door; it shuts off immediately and blinks the light, as if there's a jam or something is...

New house, new shop - planning stages

Doubling the space would be nice, but there is a budget. I may go bigger, but may not go quite that big. My house will be next to my parent's place, and there's already a parking space for the tractor, excavator, firewood truck and other toys. I'm not an RV guy, but there will be room to park a...

New house, new shop - planning stages

I'm leaving the Bay Area and headed back home to Southern Oregon where I grew up. Selling my house here should finance my new shop & house. I have a 5 acre piece of land and should break ground some time next spring when the rain lets up. I have a guest cabin to stay in for the winter. My...

Best LED 48" Shoplight in 2017?

Rather than buy new fixtures, I bought LED "bulbs" that replace my existing T8 48" tubes. I got the kind that run on 120vAC, and removed the ballast from my old fixtures. If the LEDs fail, I can swap in new ones. Somethin like this I've been very happy with them. The only downside that I can...

    Show us your VFD conversions/installations

Great thread! I have a question about my mill that runs a 1 hp motor on 220 single phase. I've considered putting a VFD on in, simply for a speed controller. If I keep the pulleys set for high speed, and slow it down with the VFD, will I lose a bunch of torque?

    22" entry door - repair/replace/diy?

Buy a solid core door, and cut it down. It should be pretty simple.
