That's a real hack job. I'd carefully remove and save the existing trim, reconstruct the opening and install a new door as shown in this video.

Install a different type of holder, one that covers the holes or one that doesn't put the outward force on the supports that a spring-loaded holder does.

Bolt and barrel nut plus a shallow tenon ....OR.... 1/2" diameter dowels and glue.

I use a Schroder which I purchased in 2009.

+1 for 3M mounting tape or some other 3M adhesive. Another idea is to use adhesive-mount stud bolts.

I have the Stanley Sortmaster bins (#STST14022) and have been happy with them. The Craftsman bins (#CMST14022) are made by Stanley and are identical except for the color. If you are happy with your Stanley bins wait for them to go on sale. I paid a little over $8.00 each for mine.
