    The VISES of Garage Journal

Nice job and welcome to GJ Bearded One; that looks better than new. I now have 8 old vises and its addicting.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Picked up this Desmond-Simplex 500 for $20 the other day and its in great shape and only missing one of the pipe jaw inserts and the cutter that goes in the hardy hole on the anvil. I almost never use either but you know it will bug me until I find one or make one to complete it. It cleaned up...

    Harbor Freight 20 Ton Press

I have had my press for a couple years and use it all the time. I added the casters, grade 8 bolts, and have collected a few quality press plates and next purchase is the air over hydraulic jack. The main reason I posted this is because I got my 20 ton press for something like $116 because it...

What work pants do you guys wear?

Khaki 5.11 Tactical for EMS duties (part of the uniform), Dickies classic or Levis for summer around the farm and Filson Tin Oil finish for winter farm work (expensive but an actual investment).

New Lennox Tool Chest at Lowes

I have seen the Husky too and it is far better quality. Even the handle on the side is cheap on the Lennox.

    Show your new tool arrivals

I have had that grinder for a couple years Jim and it has been pretty good to me. The motor gets a little warm after extended use and I doctored the tool rests a bit but I have had no trouble with it.

New Lennox Tool Chest at Lowes

Holy cow I just saw the Lennox roller tool chest at Lowes today and it is not very good at all. The drawers were not smooth, it was very cheaply made and felt flimsy, the wheels were el cheapo plastic and literally nothing felt good about it. It was also about $450. I don't like to bash brands...

Two breaker panels one service disconnect

No code enforcement here in farmville but good point about the bushing. I have that plus the plugs for the open knockouts. When I say no code I mean other than federally mandated septic standards you can build a house out of soda cans anywhere on your property and it would be fine. We have no...

Two breaker panels one service disconnect

I am not exactly sure when this was done but I suspect it was before 2008 and again, we have no codes here so who knows. Yes both panels are fed from the load side of the 200 amp breaker in the service disconnect and the disconnect is below the meter so when I shut that breaker off both panels...

Two breaker panels one service disconnect

I have a 60 amp service on a separate breaker panel for my shop that works fine but there is no grounding at all and I want to install a grounding rod and ground it. I "think" that it is a separate panel fed from the service disconnect since it is a 3 wire feed and that I should ground it with...

    1930 Firehouse in Hoquiam Washington

Its mild right now so it warms up during the day but we have lived here for going on 9 years and the temps in the winter get into the teens and even below zero on occasion and it is just not what you would think. I was very leery about living in this house (original plan was to tear down and...

Show us Your Vintage Bench Grinders!!!!

Picked this Black and Decker up for something like $20. Un-grounded plug and a bit beat but the motor was good and even the bearings were in good shape. All I did was clean it, oil it, rewire it, paint it, add new wheels and build new tool rests and I have been using it now for going on 2...

    1930 Firehouse in Hoquiam Washington

It sounds counter intuitive and I dont know about brick but I live in a stone and concrete house with no wall insulation and it is the warmest house I have ever had. Once you heat it it acts like a heat sink and there are zero drafts. Warm in winter and cool in summer with low utility bills...

    1930 Firehouse in Hoquiam Washington

HAHA I hadn't thought of the meaning of my pronunciation! Thanks for the response, I like to be able to pronounce place names correctly even if just in my head when I am reading.

My new property and ten years to get it ready. Tear down the barn?

I have a 36' x 62' two story dairy barn on my small farm and though from a practicality and financial standpoint it would probably be better in the long run to tear it down and put up a more efficient pole barn I just could never do it. My barn was built in 1938 and is in good shape but the...
