    tech confirmed compressor is junked. it's using hcfc-22, so it was recommended to replace the system. seconded by two other reputable companies in my area. gathering quotes now, but looks like this will be a $10k+ unplanned expense. :willy_nil

    now, i'm no expert (as evidenced by my portrait video capture), but it seems to me like what i have here is a bad compressor in my outside unit. :( the condenser fan was completely removed during the video, and FWIW it spins freely and silently. only moving part is the compressor.

    i used butcher block coated with minwax poly. so far it's held up just fine, but hasn't seen any really heavy abuse.
