I used some JB Weld to fill in the damage area. The vice works smoothly with no binding at all. I'm just waiting for some aluminum bar to make some vise jaw pads.
I think I can make a good usable vise minus the swivel base I'm using for my C1 vise. I stripped it down to bear metal, other then the damaged slide and some battle scars its in fine shape. All I need is some vise jaws to make it a usable vise. The lead screw is in great shape and it slides in...
Here's close up of the damage, not sure how to fix it without a welder. Looks like someone tried to repair it, maybe they used JB Weld. It does slide in and out just fine.
I found a Wilton 4" Bullet vise on Facebook that I could pass up. It's missing the jaws, has a hole in the round slide. It also has a broken off piece beneath one of the jaws. The main reason I got it was for the swivel base. The base is complete with only a bent handel on one of the hold down...
Your tapered pin does not look original but if it fits correctly then that's good. Maybe you can round off the top of the pin, that would look more original. You should be able to find a solid pin to hold the rear jaw, good luck.
I cannot remove the long pin holding the rear, the top tapered knob comes out fine. I don't want to damage the vise trying to remove a 100 year old pin. May some heat would help, not sure. Sorry for all the replies
The original setup is a small set screw, a spring, then a steel ball. I'm trying to find a set screw with a ball bearing at the tip. They make them, I just need the correct size.
