Ever do something so stupid you wonder if you should be left unsupervised?

I'm that guy. It's me. I'm that guy that everybody knows about, but nobody actually knows. I'm the guy who pulled the intake off his car, and packed shop rags in the heads to keep garbage from falling down the intake runners. And then I put the new intake on. And then I broke my *** for a...

    Tool auctions?

Here's been my auction experience: it's fun. It's easy to catch the fever and bid too high for something you maybe don't even really want. There are occasional crazy deals that make it all worthwhile, but auctions are fun even if you don't come home with anything (kind of like a day fishing)...

    Gun wall storage ideas?

Homak makes an in-wall rifle locker. They call it a 'safe' but it's more like a 'locking flush-mount steel cabinet'. I've got one in my master suite closet- it's full with 4 long guns. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Homak-Security-White-Between-The-Studs-1-32-cu-ft-Long-Wall-Safe-WS00018002/202920087

music for my single car garage

I have these beefy 'outdoor' speakers 8ft high on the front wall, pointing out into a 60x85 shop. They're powered by an 50Wx2 1980s-era Sony receiver we found in a dumpster. I bought a $20 iPod dock with RCA outs, and plugged that into the dumpster Sony receiver. It works GREAT. I used to...

Anyone ever make their own butcher block bench tops?

My 'beater' bench is 100yr old pine & cypress 2x4s, straight out of a renovation project. I stood them on end and drilled them for 3/8" allthread every 12''. Glued and bolted them all together into a 60x24 benchtop. Smoothed it (sort of) with a 7" flap wheel, brushed a couple coats of poly on...

How do you store your hammer(s)?

All my hammers (about 30) hang on a 4x4 pegboard on the wall. Nothing fancy, not even worth a picture. Works great, easy to find the right hammer, easy to notice a missing hammer, plus I think a four-foot square of various hammers is beautiful wall art.

    What a mess!

You should have seen the mook I cleaned off my concrete after Katrina left my garage in 5 feet of water for 2 weeks. The top layer was like 4 inches of peanut butter and I got that out with a flatnose shovel. When I got down to the filthy oily concrete, I spread out a LOT of laundry detergent...

    Harbor Freight all-stars

The Legendary Purple HVLP Gun? (47016) And I'll +1 the dead blow hammers, 20T Shop Press, short bar clamps, and the (corded) oscillating multi-tool.

    Pipe bending ??

I agree with sac02. If you don't have a clear idea of what you're doing, don't do it. Internet forums, even our beloved GJ, are full of people who will 'help' by shooting their mouths off whether they know anything or not. None of these pontificators are going to be in your car if it goes wheels...

    Compressor troubleshooting

It's rings. The blue haze is oil getting past the rings and getting blown all over the place. If your compressor's always made this haze, it's always had a ring problem. Reed valves don't seal like poppet valves; compressors always blow some air back through the intake. So that puffpuffpuff at...

    Table Saw

I'm waiting for a long debate about whether Portugal or Austria made the best carbide tips for WWII-era logging saws, which naturally ten members will actually claim to own. THE GUY'S JUST ASKING ABOUT A ONCE-IN-A-WHILE TABLE SAW FOR GOD'S SAKE. Most of the responses don't even pretend to...

    Table Saw

http://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWALT-10-in-Compact-Job-Site-Table-Saw-with-Site-Pro-Modular-Guarding-System-DWE7480/204511988 I got one of these because I threw the store manager $150 for the open-box unit (it helped that I was buying $1,000 worth of other stuff) I only use it once or twice a...

Used Motor Oil - Need Suggestions

I burn all my old motor oil and ATF in my 89 F350. I just pour it right into the fuel tank, a gallon or more at a time.

First REAL Tool Purchase When I Was Younger

I was 15 in 1979, started working in an auto machine shop. My first two paychecks were spent on the Snap-on Truck- I felt like the King Of The World. I bought an 11-pc set of black-handle screwdrivers first, then a set of stubby black combination wrenches. I carefully stamped/engraved my SSN on...

    Considering 3 Phase...

Thank you! That is exactly what I was trying to explain, after the nice PoCo lady was trying to explain it to me. I'm pretty much settled on maintaining 3 phase service, although not the giant (ridiculously expensive) 600A service that's getting pulled out. PROBLEM SOLVED courtesy of GJ...
