    Fiber Optic vs Cat6

I am reviving this old thread because it is relevant to the planning I am dong for my new garage in Hiawassee, GA. I built a new detached garage/shop late last year that is about 350 feet from the house. I trenched and ran power out there to a 100 amp subpanel through conduit. I also laid a...

2 or 4-Post Lifts - Who? What? Pros & Cons?

I have a Model A Ford ('29) and run into this when using a 2 post lift to lift it at another shop I work in. The arms barely get under the running boards, around the muffler, etc., to touch the frame to raise it. The arms are only about 1/4" clear of the underside of the running boards when...

Hardiplank over foam board over OSB

I decided Zip board was too costly for what you got. I am just doing OSB with Tyvek, then Hardi siding and putting all the insulation inside the 2x6 walls. Thanks for all your input.

Bury phone and internet to the garage

Re: Burry phone and internet to the garage How long of a run can you do with conduit between house and garage? I think I am 150 feet.

Hardiplank over foam board over OSB

My siding guy actually recommended the Zip board today. I will look at it. Thanks for the replies, guys!

Hardiplank over foam board over OSB

OK, thanks. I might drop it. It is just a garage, after all. I am not living in it (yet). 8-)

Hardiplank over foam board over OSB

Trying to get a base level of insulation outside, then insulate inside later. It is an idea I picked up on GJ. Maybe its not worth it.

Hardiplank over foam board over OSB

Greetings all! I have been lurking for a while, getting ready to break ground on the garage at the end of the month. I am in North Georgia in the mountains. I was thinking about putting OSB over the framing studs and then foam board over that and taping the foam board. Then putting...

Powering house from barn, moving meter.

Yes. But not so easy to feed the house from a generator out at the garage...

Any solutions for open overhead door blocking lights?

I had this same issue with my 18x8 door. I hung two 8 foot fluorescent fixtures from the ceiling with lightweight chain at a position just along the top edge of the overhead door when up, and down just to a point where the bulbs were not shadowed by the door. I get light under the open door...

    Electrical Questions...

Drywall is actually pretty easy to repair if you cut it just where you need to get access to the wires. I see it done in new home construction all the time, when the drywall is up and then some genius figures out that something was left out. Don't let that slow you down.

    How Many Lights?

That's good to hear. That works out to 54 lumens/sq.ft, which kind of supports my number (my current garage is a bit bigger and has 45 Lumens/sq.ft.) My new building will be 54 lumens/sq.ft., same as yours. You don't need 100 lumens/sq.ft. unless you want to do detailed work anywhere in the...

    How Many Lights?

I think 100 lumens per square foot everywhere might be over-doing it. It depends on what you plan to do in the space. For example, a woodworking shop needs that, plus task lighting on some machines. General garage use (store some cars, have a bench to keep tools, etc.) does not need that much...

    Water Heater

Propane seldom beats electric. There is a glut of natural gas in the US right now, which equals low nat gas prices and low electric prices. Not so with propane.
