One thing to note is this machine probably had a very long life and went through several modifications to its drive train, base, etc. There might be little left of what was original on this machine.
I would say you are on to something. rlitman's link actually says the sockets for that ratchet are modified snap ons! I agree much of this is custom made, Nasa wasn't above using off the shelf if they could.
I see the occasional vintage BIRO or other branded butcher bandsaw for sale locally and was just wondering if there is anything inherently different about these saws that prevent them from being used for wood or metal (depending on speeds).
