    Steel deck posts

I’m building a deck off of my second floor shop and was seriously considering using steel tubing as the posts instead of pt 6x6’s. They would be 5”x5” square and 11 ga thick. The posts would be around 13’ tall. My question is what sort of a bracket would you weld on top to securely hold the beam...

    Under slab dust collection

Here are some photos that I took before and after the pour. Unfortunately I can’t tell you if my system works well or not as I’m still building the shop and haven’t hooked up the dust collector or the tools. I ran a 6” straight main line and branched off with 4” for each tool. Plenty of people...

    LP smart siding question

Your right, they do claim it to be 47.88” wide, which is strange because I have some 4x10 sheets on site (not of the actual siding I’m using) and I measured it to be 4’ so I’ll double check that. It’s the vertical siding that LP specs state is right at 16” wide (15.94)that I will have to rip at...

    LP smart siding question

That’s the frustrating part. They make their product full sized…48” or 16”. Anyone that has actually installed this product run into this problem?

    LP smart siding question

Hi guys, I’m just about to get started on siding my shop. Walls are 2x6, 16” on center, 5/8” osb sheathing. I purposely sized the shop so there would be little waste of materials (40x72). I’m using LP diamond kote siding in board and batten. This will be mainly 4x10 sheets but I’ll use 16” wide...

Timber frame to dimensional lumber gable roof

So just leave room on the vertical 8x8 king post in order to rest the 2x10 on, using a joist hanger to keep it vertical? Makes sense! You’re right, there are YouTube videos showing how to do jack rafters. My issue is raising them 7/8” higher than the timber frame so the 1 1/2” t&g matches the...

Timber frame to dimensional lumber gable roof

The image 0807 is the closest artist rendition that I could find. Mine will be a two post as shown in the 0811 pic and will be dependent on the main building for support. There will be three sets of rafters and then jack rafters after that over the main roof. There is no engineer and all I have...

Timber frame to dimensional lumber gable roof

Hi guys, I’ve appreciated all the comments and suggestions on my obstacles to building my own 72’x40’ shop. I’m ready to get this thing shingled but still have a timber frame gable roof to build on the front of it. I have gotten started with the uprights and horizontal beams but I’m struggling...

    Timber frame gable eve alignment

I appreciate your input. My wife knows absolutely nothing about what I’m usually doing. But she’ll say something that sparks an idea in my misfiring brain. So any input is appreciated. I have burned many hours trying to come to a workable solution on this so I’m ready for any suggestions.

    Timber frame gable eve alignment

I considered that in response to earlier posts on this subject. But as usual, I took the more difficult route. I think if I can muster a close approximation of the two roofs joining in the same plane I will try to do that. Leaving exposed timber tails should give me more flexibility on not...

    Timber frame gable eve alignment

LOL, I don’t know what I’m doing either. But I do know the beams will be higher than the top plate. My math using the rafter calculator comes out to the bottom of the beams being 6 1/2” higher than the top plate. That’s using the 1-1/2” sheathing and allowing for 11/16” shrinkage. But I don’t...

    Timber frame gable eve alignment

I don’t mean to beat this dead horse. But I’m now truly in the thick of framing this timber frame gable and I‘m hoping these pictures help you guys give me some more informed advice. The rafter calculator did end up giving me some very useful measurements but I’m still trying to wrap my head...

    Timber frame gable eve alignment

Yeah, maybe I should rethink this whole thing. Going higher with the timber frame solves my level eave problem but I think it must cause some roof flashing issues where the shingles of the main roof go up under the timber frame gable (Can’t quite picture the details there). Maybe let the roofers...

    Timber frame gable eve alignment

I thought about that too. Cut the tips off horizontally to match the 2x6 fascia. I think I will definitely do that and I have seen pics with that done and it looks good. Thanks Andy.

    Timber frame gable eve alignment

I thought about doing that and I would prefer it actually. But, I was trying to keep the rain gutters simplified because I have to trench for each downspout to get it under the driveway. I think raising that roof would involve two more downspouts but not sure. Thanks for the ideas!
