4 Barrel barn build.

Hey there team. Long time lurker, first time poster. Tomorrow I have 2 truck loads of lumber and poles arriving to start the construction of my forever shop.
So far we have done a bit of excavation, permit gaining, planning and ordering. It is mid winter here on the other side of the planet so hopefully the dry winter we have been promised stays on track
We bought the property Nov last year and immediately began scheming to get the build underway.
I am Woodbox over on the hamb and have been building a few cars covered on there for a few years now.

20m wide by 11m deep. Each bay will be 6.6m x 11m. Central bay will house the 4 post hoist. Left bay is wood shop and right bay is steel fab/shaping.

Central bay also has floor to ceiling pallet racking both sides.
Each side bay will have a steel beam to support the roof and run a gantry car for lifting to save my back.

I saw a notation for storm water to go to tanks.
Does tank = barrel?
Will you have 1x tank (barrel) at each corner; therefore 4-Barrels?

My good lady loves barrels (the wooden kind) I build hotrods with 4 barrel carbs.

It has been a busy couple of days. My mate turned up with his excavator and truck to help me drill 20 holes and stand 20 poles. We braced them all in position and tidied up today
Tomorrow (Saturday)morning at 8 am the concrete truck arrives to place concrete around the bases of all the poles. Next week we will cut the footing around the perimeter of the shed and box up ready to pour the floor.

Big (not so big) day today! 8am the truck arrives with 4.2m³ of concrete for the pole holes.


Brian from Virgin concrete was great, putting the truck exactly where we needed it for each hole so we didn't have to barrow any more than necessary.


Morgan came to give me a helping hand with the heavy lifting and barrowing. We managed to only need the barrows for the 4 small holes right near the house side .



We drained the truck dry and topped up the center 4 holes that don't have any further footing to be dug around them.
Now we wait for it to set before removing the bracing, digging the boundary footing and screwing the boxing timber to the poles.
Not long now and we can pour the slab.

This afternoon I set about removing all the bracing, profiles, stakes and associated **** that we will no longer be needing. With the site nice and tidy and easy to navigate we can proceed tomorrow with digging the boundary footing and box up for the slab.

Today we dug all of the boundary footings and had a tidy up around the yard with the excavator.
I have also positioned the conduits for the power around the shop, they will be buried when the floor is poured.

Another day on the pad is over. More moving aggregate and fines around today and driving the plate compactor to establish our concrete substrate.


It seems that no sooner do we get it looking smart, then we dig it up again!
This time is to insert another conduit for the hoist power supply.


Last thing before I stopped for the day I started to distribute the 300mm x 50 mm boards that we are using for concrete shuttering/boxing, ready to position and fasten tomorrow.

That's what I thought.
We had a lot of rain overnight, the footings are all flooded, and it looks like we are in for more today, so maybe a physical health day today and back into the hard graft again tomorrow.

A busy week of boxing, leveling, straightening, compacting and hiding from the rain!
With all the final fines in position and compacted.

The last of the sunlight on one of the shortest winter days.

Another truck loaded with mesh and associated reinforcing materials arrived this afternoon, before the contractor turns up in the morning.

The last view of my work before the contractor does his magic and we pour concrete next week.
I can't wait to have a floor to work on and get off the mud!

Another couple of busy days with the team placing mesh and reinforcement steel onto the pad.

While the lads were doing that I made up some roller door recesses to reduce the chance of weather driving under the doors.

The portion of the steel that is over the top of the boxing will be removed after the concrete, they are simply there to locate.
The brackets for attaching the slab to the bottom plate are cast into the concrete and simply tack onto the boxing then bend over the bottom plate at a later time.

Today the engineer visited to tick a few boxes, tomorrow the council building inspector is here to tick a few more before we cover it all in concrete.

A visit today from the council inspector for a pre pour inspection, all went well.... except some missing paperwork, which we soon sorted. So, we are good to go on Monday morning....... watch this space.

Monday was a bust, due to a foreboding forecast of heavy rain....... didn't amount to much after all, so we could have gotten the floor poured. Tuesday's forecast was for worse...... turned out to be more accurate, so no concrete the rest of this week while the contractor has some time out to go to a fishing competition.

7am the pump truck arrived and the crew were here to start pouring mud!
Now we're are in the middle bay and still pouring. The weather is cool and clear..... perfect!
School holidays gives us the opportunity to enlist junior operators too!


All that hard work is disappearing!

I added 8 plates 6" x 12" x 3/8" to be able to weld to later for fixing sheet metal and dents in panels.

All done, now we hurry up and wait to get the power float on for the super slick finish.

The team are putting the polish on now. Looking sharp.
I realized today is exactly 6 months from the day we started excavator work on the site.
The finish is coming up great and the sun is shining making the concrete 24°C when the shaded ground is only 10-11°C.
I can't wait to get on the floor to paint later this week after the concrete cutter has been.
It will take a while to undo all the boxing around the perimeter of the slab, then I will probably get the storm water drains on the ground and glued together before we put some fill on the ground.

Time for a bit of a catch up. Yesterday was a town day, with a list a mile long. I came home with 3 brand new roller doors on a loan trailer, 6 lengths of storm water pipe and a box full of joiners with glue, hardware to apply the paint when it arrives, fresh gas bottles for the MiG and oxygen for the cutting gear, fuel for all the ICE powered machinery and a dozen fresh sausages for dinner!
Three roller doors all 3m wide, 2 at 2.4m high and 1 at 3m high.

The day before I spent cleaning the concrete off of the boxing timber that is also destined to be structural in the building.

Laying out all the joints etc.

Today I moved 40 wheelbarrow loads of dirt from around 2 sides of the floor to make a home for the storm water pipe. I also laid down a bed of fines for the pipe.
At this point the pipe turns right to go to the tank, has a junction for spouting to join in and continues beyond the building to allow a flush outlet to dump the contents occasionally to rid it of leaves etc .
My excavator operator also dropped off a couple of loads of graded aggregate, fines for filling and coarse for drainage.
My mission tomorrow is to cut, glue, place and cover the storm drain pipes and create a nice clean finished walkway on the 2 hill sides of the building......wish me luck !

I had a busy day and achieved plenty. Lots of cutting, measuring and gluing of storm water pipes.
Really happy with the results.

Tomorrow I will fill the pipes with water to stop any movement while I fill around it with aggregate.

At this stage I have capped the inlet points ready for when the roof goes on.

You had mentioned cleaning out of leaves. We use these on downspouts which connect to drywells.


The downspout is sliced at an angle matching the slope of the screen and held up an inch or so.

They work very well at filtering out leaf debris with the first sloped screen and the secondary screen does an amazing job at capturing the fines that come of fresh asphalt shingle roofs.

You had mentioned cleaning out of leaves. We use these on downspouts which connect to drywells.


The downspout is sliced at an angle matching the slope of the screen and held up an inch or so.

They work very well at filtering out leaf debris with the first sloped screen and the secondary screen does an amazing job at capturing the fines that come of fresh asphalt shingle roofs.

The riser up to the tank is the flush outlet. I figured that it would be safer to have it adjacent to the tank so it won't get damaged by vehicle movement and lawnmower etc.

Three grades of aggregate. Fine around the pipes, medium for cover then coarse for free drainage on top.
