What tool forges are in the USA?

Danaher has a facility in DFW, I believe, and one in Fayetteville, AR. Both producing Craftsman, GearWrench, Matco, and a few others. This info is from a guy who used to work at Danaher and now works in our Boston office.

Build A Lo-Buck Gear Lube Pump:

Awesome project, drive em. I needed this the other day when putting my diff back together. Next time I'm at Pull-a-Part, I'll be looking for one of those ford pumps. I checked out a Chevy SBC pump today at Summit and they're not as easy to adapt to as the Fords. Anyone know what thread is on...

    Shop vacs

Has anyone used those $20 wet/dry vacs that snap to the top of 5 gal bucket? I never saw them until Saturday when I saw them at Home Depot. It didn't look too bad. Might be worth the $20.

    Hand Countersinks

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I already have a deburring tool (for which replacement blades were ordered in the McMaster order). Brad54, that's an excellent suggestion regarding the old hand drill. I'll have to add that to the list of things to keep an eye on at garage sales.

Very nice! I just did this recently with some wood scraps to hold my loose / odd sized taps.

    Hand Countersinks

What do you guys do for hand countersinks? (Sheet metal work, deburring/light chamfering, etc) I am putting together my upcoming McMaster order and noticed that they don't seem to carry countersinks like this : http://www.victornet.com/report/General-Hand-Held-Countersink/1867.html I've got a...

    Swagoffroad.com Portaband Accessory Plate?

Yeah, for the 40ish bucks they want for it I think one could cut one out in less than an hour. Maybe if I get bored this winter I'll make one too. According to the thread on pirate4x4.com, the guy that runs swag offroad tried making a horizontal stand for the portabands but apparently it makes...

    Swagoffroad.com Portaband Accessory Plate?

Does anyone here have one of these? Thoughts on its usefulness? http://www.swagoffroad.com/Porta_band_Product.html For those with limited space and a good vise, it looks like a great accessory. When cutting, my Milwaukee portaband is the first thing I grab. Also, any of you guys have that...

    new HF 56" cabinet?

My roommate just picked up the 42" for 349 (with coupon). I must say, it's pretty high quality. It definitely has a great feel to it. The drawers slide way better than my C-Man, and certainly better than the Kobalts at the big box stores.

    What is this?? Proto 3901

Eyeboltman, Yes, it works. I'm using the old cover, as the old cover has a small pocket milled out of it where the new one doesn't. Looking at how this ratchet changes directions, it needs to swing the cam up and through where the non-milled cover would be at, hence the need for the pocket.

    What is this?? Proto 3901

Swapped out the 3/8 repair kit for a 1/2 repair kit (Grainger P/N 1AM20) this morning. I changed out the dogs, springs, and drive gear. The old cover plate wouldn't fit (was slightly too big). A review of the position of the direction "dial", as I'll call it, has the roll pin directly aligned...

    What is this?? Proto 3901

Well, the 3/8 repair kit showed up and it turns out my eye didn't do too good of an estimate. One of the nearby Grainger branches has two 1/2" repair kits in stock, so I'll be heading over tomorrow to see if I can make a 1/2" square drive ratchet out of this thing.

    What is this?? Proto 3901

My email to Proto USA was never replied to. A phone call to Proto USA today put me in touch with a customer service rep who played the "It's not in my system, so I don't know anything about it"-game. I asked for someone who might be familiar with ratchets, and we went one more time around her...

    What is this?? Proto 3901

Thanks for the insights, guys. I've sent images and an explanation to a Stanley Proto help email address, so maybe they'll come back with something. :headscrat:

    What is this?? Proto 3901

Upon disassembly, the ratchet is missing the mechanism that allows one of the direction changes. So now the question is: Am I missing any more parts? Or is this Proto a specialty ratchet given the threads in the head?

    What is this?? Proto 3901

Came across this at the shop, and I can't seem to figure out what it is. Obviously it's a ratchet, but I've never seen one like this. Google isn't of any help, nor is the Stanley Proto website. The stamping on the head reads, "3901 PROTO" "MFD USA" The ratcheting part of the head is threaded...

    Help Cutting Train Track!

Trackwelder and nitroneal have it on the money. There's a reason they make specialty saws for rail -- the other stuff just didnt work. Never underestimate someone who knows what they're doing with a torch, either. Rail has changed a LOT in 100 years. 90 lb/yd Open-hearth rail is like butter...

Excellent Service From McMaster Carr, As Always

I've always had a great experience with McM. When I was in school, I ordered from them probably on a weekly basis, and even with ground shipping, it was here within a day or two. Once, we needed a tap ASAP, and we decided to drive to Atlanta will-call to pick it up. The counter guy was a bit...
