    Inch tools

Metric and “legacy inch based fractional measuring system”? I just use metric and SAE, or sometimes fractional.

What circular saw size for someone that wants to build their own home?

How much 4x and 6x are you going to be cutting for a house? Most people will run 7.25” saws for framing, but most aren’t going to cut anything other than 2x and sheet goods. I like a Mag77 or the Skil southpaw sidewinder.

    bathroom subfloor moisture mystery

I had an old house that had just a lead flange on The subfloor. The toilet bolts were hanger bolts into the subfloor. But considering the toilet hasn’t been used, I’d start with the supply line and tank to toilet joint.

    Tekton at Lowes?

Maybe Lowe’s can add Dewalt and Milwaukee hand tools too? Seems like they’ve got too many brands. But then if it goes like it has with other B&M retailers of Tekton they’ll only carry them for a year or so. My local hardware carried them for about 2 years and then clearanced them all out and...

how to hold wheels steady while installing wheel bolts?

I’m on my 3rd VW, and they all have lug bolts. I bought a set of wheel studs designed to replace the bolts. I keep 2 of them and a T-handle allen wrench for them in the car. I just hand tread one in, put the wheel on and once I’ve got a couple bolts started use the Allen wrench to pull the...

    Best 1/2 extra long ratchets?

I picked up a Tekton on clearance a few years ago. I haven't put tons of torque on it, but the extra reach has been handy.

    Favorite claw hammer July 2021.

I much prefer a wood handled hammer, but do have a steel Kobalt hammer in my bags right now. Most of my hammer use now is setting a nail that didn’t fully drive from the gun. I don’t ever see myself using my old 25oz framer again, but I’ve still got it. One of my sons is in a carpentry...

    Revenge tool shopping strikes again!

If my wife asked me to buy her something like that, my response would be that I’ve got a nice set of jumper cables in the car and a 5 & 12volt power supply she can use... That said she did spent $150 on a haircut yesterday. So I don’t feel bad about buying a new 1/2” impact.

    Axel seals

I’m going on ONE experience rebuilding a diff, so I certainly could be wrong, but it felt to me like you’d have to remove the yolk to get the seal out. At which point I though you’re supposed to change the crush sleeve and reset pinion preload. But I again, my experience is very low on this.

    Hand Cleaner favorites

I’ve been using ‘fast orange’ hand cleaner and have been pretty happy with it. Buy it in the 1/2 gallon bottle with a pump.

    Axel seals

I’ve used large sockets too (that’s actually how I was taught). Only time I’ve done a pinion seal I was doing carrier bearings too so I’m not sure (on a GM 12 bolt), but can you just replace the pinion seal without having to set preload?

Why aren't dog bone wrenches popular nowadays?

    Laminated ratcheting wrenches.

I’ve got an old metric set somewhere that I basically never use. I did have a nice 5/16” one somewhere that I loved for side terminal batteries. Otherwise I’m not a big fan of ratcheting wrenches in general.

Why are pex adapters brass and not copper?

Maybe the copper is too soft and will crush under the crimps? No idea though really. As for soldering, I’ve had no issues with them, I treated it just like copper.

Why no High Quality Tape Measures?

I lose tape measures so often that I couldn’t afford to buy anything too expensive. I picked up 6 Stanley tapes at a garage sale last spring, and can only find one of them now. I suppose if I’d paid $100ea for them instead of $10 for the lot I might take better care of them.

    3/8" air hose reel enough?

I love my air hose reel too. It’s just 3/8” and mostly used for airing up tires, etc anymore. I also have several 1/2” black pipe drops around the garage with quick connects, but its so much easier to use the reel vs untangling a hose and then coiling it back up. Occasionally I’ll run an...

Chainsaw chain--Same specs as the old one...still binding and throwing the chain

The clutch drum in this case doesn’t have anything to do with what size chain you should run, it’s the rim sprocket that matters. Just from the pics, it looks like those chains are slightly different pitch - if you line up the drive links on the 2 chains they just don’t look like they quite line...

For mechanics: 6 point and 12 point sockets

Yep I’ve preferred 6pt for years, especially here in the rust belt. That said I do have a set of 12pt metrics for the few times I run into them...although last time I couldn’t find them and ended up buying another set. When I was cleaning up I found the original set and gave the new ones to my...

New saw: Rancher 460 or MS311

I missed the part about cutting 2-3’ oaks. If you’re bucking them to firewood lengths too, I’d probably be looking at a MS460 or MS660 for those. My 460 wears a 24” bar with full chisel (not skip) for this type of work.

New saw: Rancher 460 or MS311

I’ve got 3 saws, a 40cc husky 141 that I’ve had for years, an old Stihl 034 super (60cc) I bought very used, and a Stihl 460 mag (76cc I think) also got used. The 034 is probably my favorite with the best power to weight for me. Looks like the 311 should be pretty close to it in power &...
