    Old Bell System Klein find

Out for our morning stroll, there was a garage sale a couple of blocks from home. By Saturday morning there wasn't much left, except a box of Stanley adjustable wrenches, a box of Klein dikes, lineman's pliers, a box of Klein needlenose, four Klein flat blade screwdrivers, some cable cutters...

Why do I keep repairing Ryobi junk?

Ryobi battery-powered tools, batteries and chargers have given me problems since they became a thing. No, I'd never buy Ryobi myself, but over the years, because it's at Home Depot, family and friends have given me a lot of it as presents. Most recently, the 48-volt leaf blower had the handle...

    Free to a good home - 1948 Manual for Multimeter TS-297/U - WWII Army/Airforce

The TS-297/U multimeter was a heavy-duty unit used by US Army and Air Force techs for many years. I had two of these and gave them away, forgetting the manual which should have gone with them. Am doing the GJ pay-it-forward, so the manual is free to a good home, just pay the postage. jack vines

Blame inflation, or has GJ has now done for DP asking prices what we did for vises and tool boxes?

Scrolling through craigslist today, I saw a '50s Craftsman 100 benchtop DP, "needs motor" listed for $360. FWIW, I've never paid more than $100 for a complete working bench DP; maybe that was then and this is now. jack vines

Old guy rant of the day - NOT ALL TOP BOXES ARE ROAD CHESTS !!

Preaching to the choir here, but at least once a week there is a generic, only occasionally a Snap on, top chest, advertised for sale as a "ROAD CHEST" or "Road Box". The for true Road Chests are the Snap on KRA 60, 62, 6200, 6210 series, built hell-for-stout and only 26" wide, to stand up...

A new failure mode in household electrics

Recently, a 20-amp circuit breaker servicing standard duplex outlets kicked out for no obvious reason. I unplugged everything on those outlets, reset the breaker and plugged each back in in turn, finding no tells. A few days later, the circuit breaker kicked out again and this time, wouldn't...

Ingersoll Rand Charge Air Pro 5hp air compressor questions asked and answered

I was asked to look at an older IR ChargeAir Pro 5hp horizontal tank compressor. The data plate on the motor is so faded as to be unreadable. Questions: 1. It came with an unusual horizontal blade plug. and the capacitor on the motor is labeled 115-volt. Unusual for a 5hp motor to be...

Least expensive packing and shipping for a single socket?

I came across some NOS 3/8-"dr war-finish sockets and picked them up to pass along, as I knew they'd be of interest to some here. However, to be cost-effective for these members and time/labor effective for me to pass them along, I've got to find an easy means of packing and shipping. How...
