The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

It looks just like an old Talco box that I have, apart from different knobs and handles, and I use that for the same thing now.:) Post up some pics when it has become the display item(y)

Pls help me identify some oldies

The Knipex Combination Pliers with the insulated handles are good quality made in Germany. New ones like that cost around £40 here in UK, equivalent $54 in USA https://www.knipex.com/en-uk/combination-pliers?v=6686

Ball Peen Hammer Head: Correct Shape & How To

The instructor at my Son's blacksmith college dressed hammer heads using a Linisher, a belt sander. He moved the hammer head around when applied to the moving abrasive so it didn't form flat spots and left a neat slightly domed face. Then finished off around the edge of the striking face with a...

Parallel jaw pliers, what are they good for, why a niche?

This is an interesting thread. I've not got any Maun pliers, but several people whose opinion I respect like them. I had a look at them recently when shopping for some new cutters something better than the usual diagonal cutters which are handy and convenient but not as efficient leverage. Due...

Parallel jaw pliers, what are they good for, why a niche?

One huge advantage with any of the parallel grip type pliers is that the gripping pressure, the mechanical advantage, the leverage, whatever you call it, remains constant along the whole length of the jaws. I think this is largely why people get to like them so much. If you grip something at the...

Vintage edwards bench top english wheel

I was wondering about that. The 1st picture looks like it's for sale on eBay, and the electrical socket on the wall behind it is in the UK. In the 2nd picture the wooden box looks nicely made but brand new.

    Vintage vise grip

It looks pretty old. I think you would be better off posting it on the 'Vise Grip' thread: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/holy-vise-grip-batman.345308/

SHOW OFF YOUR VINTAGE METAL CANS AND CONTAINERS!! oil, gas, ointments, and just cans

Nice useful good condition can. It doesn't look rusty at all, and i suppose the inside is just as good(y). I've done the same having to make a gasket, except i cut one from the side of an old rubber boot.. If 1983 is old enough for vintage i had better check the dates on a couple of jerrycans...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Put masking tape over the sticker whilst you paint the box. Trim the edges of the tape neatly to the edge of the sticker with a razor blade.

    Britool (Made in England) thread

I assume that's the idea of it, but the sequence of sizes never seems to be of any practical use! I avoid carrying combination wrenches in tractors or vehicles, they're best as a compliment to a socket set. In the field i carry a set of open end and a set of ring ends.

    Books!

Here's a 1939 German atlas. My late Father had it in safe keeping for the previous owner and it's shortly to be returned to his family. It was stolen from a classroom desk by a Paratrooper, so as he could find his way home. There is an amazing, detailed and fascinating story attached to it, but...

Ridgid Super Eight pipe wrench restoration

Would anyone kindly be able to Identify this type of Axel/Jack Stand please?!

They look like Cable Drum Jacks or stands to me. The reason the spindle bar tube in the top can be angled is to keep the base away from the cable drum and also to prevent it binding on the bar. They don't need a very wide base, the drum is relatively heavy compared to the force needed to rotate it.

    Bonney Lever Drive 4080 Ratchet

The WD40 soak is a good idea. If it doesn't move maybe gently tap the top of the screwdriver whilst trying to turn it, sometimes the impact shock will free things up, but be careful not to mash up the screw head. Use a screwdriver made with the tang through the handle. One of those hand held...

    Bonney Lever Drive 4080 Ratchet

Pics look great, but I don't understand how the mechanism works! Are the planetary gears constantly in mesh with the outer ring? Does the slide selector holder somehow ratchet on the planetary gear teeth?:headscrat

    Sheffield brass torpedo level

Looks like you've got it! I've never heard of that brand before, the wood handle screw driver looks rather nice.

    Sheffield brass torpedo level

It was likely made IN Sheffield, England rather then by somebody called 'Sheffield'? Can't see the name on the picture. Any chance of some more detailed close up pics of any name or details, and I will see if I can find a maker.
