    Soldering iron brands

Check out the selection at https://www.circuitspecialists.com/soldering-stations I have been very happy with everything I have purchased from them. As for tips. Stick with Hakko... and be weary of any “too good to be true” pricing on Hakko tips. There are some really good looking counterfeits...

    Craftsman Drill Press

Damn! $95 with an intact vari-slo assembly! That is a 100% “you ****” price! Where about in Oregon did this come from? Was it a Craigslist listing?

What's a good Tap and die set?

For thread chasing, the Craftsman 48pc thread restoration set is a phenomenal value. They are made in the USA and are the same kits sold on the tool trucks. These Craftsman USA made kits are readily available on eBay for $50-$70...

    Craftsman Drill Press

Well I guess they are not as nice as I remembered.... one is broken, so it’s useless. The other two are kinda rusty (would still clean up well enough) and one of those has slightly bent threads on the smaller side that threads into the hub. That bending is very common on the early 100-style feed...

    Quality air compressor regulators

It’s possible... but there shouldn’t be a ton of debris coming out of the compressor tank either way. I did it as an extra measure of protection. Here are some photos of my setup:

    Quality air compressor regulators

I’ve been using Ingersoll ARO products for 8-ish yrs with great success. These are true industrial grade filters/regulator/lubricators. I use a pre-filter near the compressor and then just before my two hose reels i have separate regulators. For my “clean” air reel, I use a regulator/filter...

Which is exactly as LG figured, and the most likely answer to the OP’s somewhat ambiguous question.

Help figuring area of oddball shape

I assumed he was trying to figure out how much “screen” material he needed to cover a dome shape. I probably immediately overcomplicated the problem as simple 2d areas/projections seemed too straight forward. As for the 48” vs 60” diameter. I figured something was a typo. He said 5ft diameter...

Help figuring area of oddball shape

It’s because we are both assuming something different regarding the question. You are assuming it’s 2-dimensional flat profile that is semicircular in shape. In which case the 2.8sqft calc is correct. I assumed he was making some type of domed cap (spherical) defined by a 48in diameter and a...

Help figuring area of oddball shape

The area of a spherical cap is given by the equation pi*(a^2 + h^2). Where “a” is the radius of the spherical cap, and “h” is the height of the cap segment. So in your case it’s Area = pi*(24^2 + 12^2) = 3.14(576+144) = 2260.8 in^2 = 15.7 sq ft.

    Athol No.103 Vise

Old Athol catalogs/ads/brochures seem to be hard to come by. It can also be difficult to date them. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a #103 in any of the catalogs/brochures I’ve looked at. What is your plan for this vise? Restoration? It’s gonna need some TLC for sure. The back end of the slide on...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

I did a little detective work and some google image searching.... I found this post, right here in this same thread! https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3666711&postcount=1966 Note, that JeremeyBurke also couldn’t find any date code or manufacturer info. But even MORE...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Thanks guys... Not quite sure I quite paid a "You ****" worthy price. I see so many ridiculous deals that people get on this site... Sometimes it seems like you didn't get a good deal unless you got it for free or the "seller" paid you to take it. :lol_hitti Ill try some gentle methods to strip...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

I picked up my first "vintage" Craftsman tool box last week. Thanks to RileySan for the heads-up  on this 1950's "Heritage" stack that was for sale at a local used tool store. Was marked as $125 for the top & bottom chest, but I took it home for a very fair $100. My plan is to use the...

Tool ID: Interesting old pick? Any ideas?

Wow. It’s obvious now. My wife even has some in our kitchen. We use them more often for shellfish. I guess I wasn’t thinking outside the “tool box” when trying to ID it.

Tool ID: Interesting old pick? Any ideas?

Found this intersting little tool in a 1950’s tool box I just aquired. It is 4-5in long with a unique tip shape. Also of interest is the detailed “knurling” and finnial detail on the end. Does anybody have any insight regarding the origial use of this tool or its manufacturer? Here are the pics:

    Drill press light

My Craftsman 100 had lots of open space in the middle of the main drill press casting in front of the column and behind the quill. As such, I used this internal space to mount a LED bulb on a flexible arm. The light is hard-wired with a switch and controlled independently of the drill motor. The...
