Small crack on my mower deck. Have been advised by several non reputable sources to drill a small hole near the top of the crack and run a bead, and grind it down & paint. Is the hole to be drilled at the crack start , or above it, and is it necessary to run a bead underneath? Any advice...

I received my new skids for my snowblower (Christmas present for me). These are 12 inches long vs the 4 1/2 that were original, plus 1/4 thick vs 1/8 on the bottom plate. The one original skid was almost ready to give up the ghost! I've used the blower once so far, bumping into uneven...
