    Case hardening process

Mostly covered by others, but I'll chime in anyway. 😁 A36 is low carbon steel and it does not have enough carbon in it to harden via quenching. Case hardening is where you heat a piece of typically low(er) carbon steel in a carbon-rich environment for a relatively long period of time...

Is this cast fitting weldable easy ?

Absolutely agree. If the motor and pump can support 275 gpm, then the rest of the system (piping, fittings, reservoir, etc) MUST be able to support at LEAST 275 gpm. You don't want your pump to cavitate and destroy itself because your suction line couldn't support what the pump needed...

Is this cast fitting weldable easy ?

OK. Malleable iron fitting are generally considered NOT Weldable for most cases. Because the heat of welding changes the iron structure from Malleable to brittle. Which means it will likely crack, sooner or later. Some limited exceptions for non-structural, non-critical, non-pressurized...

Is this cast fitting weldable easy ?

Couple of things. That 'fitting' at Target is for the steam-punk/industrial decor look for things like shelves and brackets and such. They LOOK like pipe fittings but they usually aren't RATED as actual pipe fittings. Beware. Next, 275 gpm through 3" nominal pipe. Eek. Your flow...

    Draw Burnishing Tool

Knotted wire wheel on an angle grinder removes most paint and rust without chewing through the steel underneath IMHE. Not necessarily all paint or all of the paint or rust, but usually at least a good portion. Crimped wire wheels don't do much though, at least for heavy duty tasks. Neither...

    Demolish staircase

First floor ~8ft above the basement floor means you should be using a 12+ ft ladder. Ladder is supposed to extend a MINIMUM of 3 ft above where you are climbing to to allow for gripping the rails and stepping out onto where you are going.

Shop Vac - Ridgid or Dewalt - Portable Unit

Dewalt stealthsonic vacs are impressively quiet, yet still **** in a good way. Quiet enough that hearing protection is not absolutely necessary.

Broken Bolt Extraction - Welding on a Nut

I have never failed to extract the broken bolt/screw/stud from the hole it broke in when I've welded a nut to the remains. Crossing my fingers that I didn't just jinx myself. Sometimes it has taken multiple welding attempts of the nut to the remains, but the process has always eventually...

    Retaining wall block question

BTW, also check your locale for zoning/building rules and restrictions. Over 3-4 ft or so often REQUIRES a fence at the wall so someone doesn't fall off the higher level. And might require more 'structure' to anchor the wall into the hillside (such as dead men or geotextile fabric anchoring...

    Welder cart layout help/ideas.

TIG rods storage rack Cable management hangers/hooks, instead of draping them over the cylinders. Hanger 'tree' for your PPE, like the welding jacket and some gloves and the helmet. Upgraded rear wheels, looks like those are plastic hub units. I generally prefer metal hubs instead of...

    Lawnmower lift.

Damn! 34" thick plywood, wow. That's 47+ layers of 3/4" plywood, not counting any glue layers you used to glue it all up. 🤣 🍺

    Welding red iron steel

About 1/8" thick material? A 140 amp class wire feed welder running. 035" FCAW wire can usually do that ok. Btw, what specific wire are you running? Brand and wire 'model' and wire size/diameter? But you WILL get better weld results if you clean the rust and crud off first. Where the...

    Welding red iron steel

There are few absolutes in life, besides death and taxes. But another one is that you ALWAYS get a better weld when you are welding clean, bright, shiny metal. Sometimes you can get away with some small amount of 'crud' and still get an OK weld. Crud is a technical term for anything that is...

    Can this be cleaned up?

See if your railroad track anvil is magnetic or not. If it's nonmagnetic, then it's likely made of manganese steel (aka Hadfield steel). Not a 100% test, but a strong indicator. Or go get the X-ray fluorescence spectrometer from the garage and get a better determination of the alloying...

    Can this be cleaned up?

Re: anvil Railroad track is a "work hardening " steel. Grind or machine off the top layer and what's left may be softer (almost mild steel soft, depending on how much of the work hardened surface is removed). Hammer away on the surface and it will work harden again though. But may deform or...

    Can this be cleaned up?

Soaking a wooden tool handle in water or a water-based substance WILL damage the wooden handle to some extent. Water soaks into the wood, the wood cells swell inside the steel hammer head, wood cells get crushed, wood dries out and the wooden handle is now loose. 🍺

Advice for a machine to weld aluminum

Aluminum cylinder head use case would lean towards TIG. For the control mostly. And a pretty powerful machine at that. $$$$$ probably. Aluminum brackets might be done with MIG or TIG. The material size and thickness dictate just how much amperage you will need in order to weld the pieces...

Looking for the worlds strongest magnetic hooks

Or just use a couple of magnetic hooks to the wall panel just like you did for the other signs. Double them up and use some chain or string to hang the sign. You have options.
