How i decided to tackle the framing around the gas line. I'm going to sandwich it in between these little strongbacks made from 2x4's. I had the lumber so its the most cost effective solution.

It's a steel pipe so I think it'll be safe. Thanks guys!

UPDATE you can see the shape the ceiling will take (finally).

I think you need ceiling joists to span the distance and keep the walls from pushing outward. that's why I went with 2x12's doing most of the heavy work. i could've stacked another set of 2x12's to get me additional height but 9 ft is more than what i need in my little shop.

I did this. 22 foot 2x12 pairs liquid nailed, screwed, and nailed together with 2x6's spanning between them. I have a hip joint roof as well.
