Tool coatings, why not electroless nickle?

I've always wondered why electroless nickle has never been used as a tool plating. It's harder and more corrosion resistant than chrome, and MUCH easier to apply. I'm sure there's a good reason, but I sure don't know what it is.

    Duralast reversable combo wrenches

Hey all, I have two of these in my collection of various wrenches, they're brand new with the tags on them, says they're made in Taiwan. Anyone know if these are just re-badged Gearwrench? They look decent, not great but not bad at all.

    Import frustration!!!

So I'm trying to find a couple replacements for a couple of missing tools. Went to EVERY place in Carson City NV that sells tools and you guessed it; NO US M MADE TOOLS WHATSOEVER. (combo wrenches & sockets) Okay I get it, price moves most items. But it really ***** that you don't even get...

Wilton Import Vise - Personal Experiences/Like-Dislike?

So a couple of years ago I got this second hand for $50.00 and I really couldn't pass it up. At the time I bought this, had a very nice English Record 4" vise that I had been using for over 15 years, and I was very happy with it. The Wilton Import turned out to be their model 69999 which has a...

    STOP & congratulate yourself

All, While cleaning up my workshop this weekend and griping about my lack of space, general facilities, tool boxes, etc. I stopped in the middle to look not of what I have to clutter things up, but of all I have managed to attain over the past decades. When we dreamed of having all we...

    Starrett Micrometer Magnifiers...ever seen these?

Hey all, Several years back I picked up these two mint condition Starrett Micrometers and they both had these really nifty magnifiers on the dials. I have never seen these before, and my google-fu is inadequate to find anything like them. I'd like to get some for the rest of my micrometers...

    BEST shop apron

Now I understand there are all sorts of different aprons for different uses. I'm a gunsmith, so my needs are very similar to that of a machinist. I don't want 50 pockets, or any flash & dash; I want an apron. To me an apron should first and foremost keep **** off your clothes. A real shop...

    Need a 24-30" long 3mm Allen wrench

Hey all, anyone know where I can find SUPER long Allen Wrenches? At the end of the season I like to empty the bowls on all 4 carbs on my motorcycle, but they're impossible to reach without taking the carbs off and that's a PIA. I could actually get to them if I had an Allen wrench that was...

Why do you think Craftsman ratchets fail so often?

I'm not a "power user" of mechanics tools, but I do my fair share of wrenching. The only tool I have consistently broken are Craftsman raised panel 1/4" & 3/8" ratchets (for some reason I've never broken a 1/2"). So it got me thinking, why is that? Clearly I'm not the only one to have this...

    Han's Garage

Hey all, found some pics of my garage/shop. Some things have changes but for the most part, this is it. As you can see, I do a little of everything, but mostly I'm a gunsmith. I use the one car side of my 3 car garage as my shop, with some spill over. Here's the closest thing I have to an...

Pawn Shop Buy - Proto/Snap On Questions

    Pittsburgh Pro ratchets and sockets

The ones made in Taiwan. I say you have to buy US made tools to get better, and not all the U.S. Made stuff is really better. My 6 point sockets are tough, and the finer tooth ratchets just think they're made by Snap On. I just think the Taiwanese Pitts Pro is the absolute best thing Harbor...

How much redundancy do you have?

Doing some cleaning up and straightening up and I was taking stock of things. I've always been of the mind that you need two of most tools. A friend who has been a pro wrench for 25 years says 3 of everything; "A pair, and a spare". For wrenches I have a pair and a spare. I have two sets...

Several 26" chests vs. one large chest

My brother in law has 11 26" tool chests in his garage. He just gets what he can find cheap as he needs them. He's actually dedicated one of his chests to just fasteners which at first seemed a bit wasteful, but after seeing how quick and easy he finds a nut, bolt, screw, pin etc, I get the...
