let's see your craftsman block grinders

I’ve got this grinder apart and the switch is out. Looks like it was made by a company called McGill Mfg Co. Has anyone had success finding one of these switches? I did a quick search and found other McGill switches but not this one. I also took the wire wheel off. Need to do more research...

let's see your craftsman block grinders

Picked up this 3/4HP grinder today for $40 with quench tray, model 397.19471. The label says Craftsman commercial but after comparing it to another 3/4HP Craftsman grinder I have model 397.19350 the only difference I see is the arbor size - 1/2” vs. 5/8.” Is there anything else I am missing...

Jonshonda, I’ve got ya beat, 31 years young here and joined this community after I learned I would rather buy older American made tools rather than spend my money in a big box store on something subpar. What’s more, I find you can buy high quality tools and equipment from the past cheaper than...

Let's Hear it for the Old Gray/Red Sears Craftsman Tool Chests and Cabinets (60s/70s)

In my searches I have come across some darker gray and red boxes and cabinets like you have here. I thought they were refinished to a darker color by someone along the way. Was this darker gray sold by craftsman also? If so, was it a timeline thing where these are earlier or later than the...

    I need these tools identified

I recently did work at an old but still operating natural gas burning steam power generating station nearby. I think the first unit came online in 1958 or so. We would use these during scheduled outages to remove valve packing (example below) from high pressure steam valves that were...

Let's Hear it for the Old Gray/Red Sears Craftsman Tool Chests and Cabinets (60s/70s)

Taumac, thanks for the info. I wanted some advice on this before I started prying and bending. Did what you said and they came right out. I played around with what you suggested regarding the sliding part and the door. I might set it up the way you suggested when I put it back together...

Let's Hear it for the Old Gray/Red Sears Craftsman Tool Chests and Cabinets (60s/70s)

Thanks for the replies. I bought a 10D chest dated 0173 and a 7D cabinet dated 0273. In the pictures it looked like the emblems were trashed but now that I have everything home I'm surprised and the overall condition. Both units were extremely dirty as they were sitting in a semi trailer as...

Let's Hear it for the Old Gray/Red Sears Craftsman Tool Chests and Cabinets (60s/70s)

Has anyone been successful finding a badge for the red and gray toolboxes? I imagine your only source would be to come across one on the second hand market? Is this the only way to get ahold of one? Also, I've seen many good looking restorations, so I'm curious, how are these badges attached...

    Show your "Long C" Craftsman!

Outlaw, All, does anyone know who manufactured C-Circle pliers? I'd sure be interested to know. Allot Artifacts has the manufacturer of C-Circle listed as unknown. http://alloy-artifacts.org/craftsman-early-tools.html

Notlob, I think I have these same wrenches that I posted in post #18. Are they coded CI? If so I didn't know they came in a case like this. I'm going to need to find one now. This is what GJ does to me!:willy_nil

What's the deal with tapatalk? Every time I visit GJ there is an ad that appears for tapatalk. I downloaded the app but didn't find it very useful for browsing and posting in the forum. Am I missing something? Is it a good tool to use with GJ?

Thanks Exmaxima1. That's what this grinder is, a non-commercial 3/4HP. I'm just worried about the availability of 7 inch wheels based on what other members have experienced.

Must have an oddball, no room here for 8 inch wheels. She does have the original craftsman wheels though. Just hope I can find what I'm looking for, haven't started looking yet.

I'm in the process of reading through this thread after just recently buying a 3/4 HP 397.19350 with 7" wheels. Are new 7" wheels hard to find if I wanted to replace them or maybe throw on something else, like a wire wheel or a buffing wheel?

Here is another one of my favorites, a C-Circle pair of lineman's pliers from 1934-1941. If the quality of these old tools wasn't enough, the nested diamond design on the outside of the grips gave them style.

Outlaw, great thread topic. I have become a collector of older Craftsman tools ever since I came across this complete set of CI combination wrenches. According to Alloy Artifacts (aside from GJ, my other favorite website to read), this set was manufactured sometime in the early to mid 1940s...

Fellow blockheads, I am in the process of reading this entire thread because I have developed an admiration for these machines and there is so much great information in one place. Plus, I find it far more enlightening and entertaining than many of the TV programs available to watch these days...

Jason, Outlaw, Torque, thanks for the help. Pulled the bottom cover off again- no date stamp. You mention flat top block, where do these fit in the realm of block grinders? Is there any previous info posted on different styles of blocks and when they were produced? Meantime, on the hunt for...
