Can I use joint-compound on wooden lath?

The hole is about 11" x 4". The hole is about 5/16" - 6/16" deep. The wooden lath is not loose. I know I can just attach a sheet of sheetrock but I already have the joint-compound at home. I did buy some powdered Plaster Of Paris but I think i bought the wrong one... it gets hard in 6 minutes...

What texture ceiling is this? Trying to patch, can not remove texture.

UPDATE: The vinegar + water technique worked. Unfortunatley, it took the paper backing of the drywall off with it. Can I still patch with drywall, tape, joint compound without the paper backing? _________________________ I'm trying to patch this hole with drywall. My plan was to remove a...

Ceiling Leak - Mold, patch hole

The leak has been fixed! There was a slightly moldy/musty smell and bubbles in the wall/ceiling that led us to find the leak. The 2' x 2' hole has been there for a few days now. The moldy smell has subsided but I want to take precautions. I do not see any mold but is there a fumigator or some...

    Help with gutter

You can see in the picture that the 2nd-floor gutter drains into the 1st-floor gutter. At the point where the 2nd-floor gutter joins the 1st-floor gutter, I believe it overflows BEHIND the vinyl siding because it drips out of the siding's drain holes. In the winter time, I get tiny icicles...
