Compression - Show Off Your Compressor

As pressure builds, it takes more power to turn. As it bogs down, the speed slows to the point that the centrifugal unloader is spinning too slow to keep the valve closed. Thus, it opens. I ran it a few times to 145 psi. Next time it bled off, it had the problem. I kept bleeding off the tank...

Compression - Show Off Your Compressor

I put a "honey, I don't want to sell it" price on my old compressor on CL. In less than 24 hours it was gone for full asking price. Being patient, I found this little gem to replace it (I got it for a "you ****" price). It was buried under 40 years of dust and grease in a sheet metal shop...

    Scored a free Champion pump!

I would stick to what ever size tank you can find for a good price. Be patient, and keep watching CL for old junk industrial compressors. Try to buy near scrap value if they don't work. They will supply the nickel and dime parts, and/or a decent tank. These pumps went on 60 or 80 gallon...

Installing a compressor pump oil seal

Good to hear! I got mine back together today. Ran a few cycles and no leaks yet from the 40 year old crank seal.

    Scored a free Champion pump!

Sweet deal. Don't know where to find a flywheel, but it is 16 1/2". There are a few manuals available to download for free on the net, you just have to search for them. Pacific Aircompressor has the parts through ebay for a great price. The early R15 has an access panel through the bottom of...

    Champion compressor valve Gasket?

Bob, it's a 1973 R15. Has the opening in the bottom of the case to access the rod bolts, which leaked like a sieve. Sealed it back up. I'm not going to do the crank seal now, after seeing your problem of installing it straight. I think all of my oil leak was coming from the crank case cover...

    Champion compressor valve Gasket?

I got the answer from the service company that I bought the gaskets from. Low pressure cylinder: Copper between intake valve and head. Aluminum on exhaust valve. High pressure cylinder: Aluminum between valve and head, copper with groove up between valve and manifolds. Hope this helps...

    Champion compressor valve Gasket?

Doing a little bit of r&r on a Champion R15 compressor. The replacement valve gaskets are a mix of copper crush gaskets and aluminum shim gaskets. When i took the valves out, there were multiple aluminum shim gaskets and no copper ones. Does anyone know what order I should put in the new...

    240 v neutral vs. ground

Thank you, it makes sense now. 3 wire = use ground. 4 wire = use neutral and ground.

    240 v neutral vs. ground

Another 240 question here. Please help me understand the difference between the neutral and ground when only using a 3 prong/wire cord. For example, my welder and compressor only have 3 wire hookup. Do you use the neutral, or ground? My sub panel has separate neutral and ground. I know...

    RPM study on air compressor's

My pump: Kellogg American 331. Leland 3 hp 1725 motor. Calculated pump RPM = 390. Calculated CFM at that RPM = 7.5. db = 79. Motor is squeeky and pump has a vibration / knock. If I solve that problem, it may be quieter, and I need to try to get it up to 500 rpm.

New Kellogg compressor! Side tank drain?

My K-A has the same set-up. It is a clear plastic dip tube that used to go to the bottom of the tank. The hose has fallen off inside the tank. I had an opportunity to "make offer" on a 321 a few months ago. It had a 30 g tank, portable on wheels, and a Wisconsin gas engine. Asking price...

    1972 Kellogg-American 325 Compressor Re-furbish (not restore or rebuild)

JG, I have a 331 also that knocks and sounds like yours. I was wondering the same thing. I know that compressors shake and vibrate, but what is excessive? Mine rocks quite a bit, like the low pressure rod/piston/counterweight is out of balance. Sorry to hijack...
