Thanks outlaw, makes sense. How long does a nasty vise need to usually soak? Full day, 2?

Thanks for the info shiftless. I did a quick wire wheeling of the rod. Ended up swapping it out for some flat stock that has a bit more surface area anyway, just to compare. I use the copper wire just because its everywhere around here. I'm an electrician, so unless it is detrimental to the...

    1919 Reed 204 1/2 restoration

Changed my electrodes out for some raw steel plates. In for its second dip. What's the best way to remove the black carbon for finishing? Suppose you could get as fussy as you want. Looked really good after an overnight soak, but still some rust around the lettering. How long would you guys...

Heres a few others from the shop. New Wilton, most likely made in China, no one uses it as you can see. The other is an unbranded bullet look alike. Has a bunch of codes stamped, but no brand, anyone know who made these, and if they are USA made. I'd say it's an early to mid 90's vise. It gets...

The electolysis is surprisingly easy to set up. Wish I would have done it sooner! Have my vintage Reed working in there now. Alot worse than yours to start though

    1919 Reed 204 1/2 restoration

Couldnt get the 2 pieces together, the niks and peens on the corner of the slide were binding, little file work and it went together nice. Anyone who wants to post their process of finishing after the bath as far as shining up the machined surfaces. Or any before and after are welcome. I just...

    1919 Reed 204 1/2 restoration

Well, this turned into a full blown project, but I've been loving it. Been loving the site aswell. I already started a thread in the vintage section, but since it has morphed into a project I wanted to post it here aswell. I will try to link the other thread here, or maybe the admins can do it...

Bighead, its solid copper plates used in heavy duty electrical equipment most is 1/4 thick. These pieces have a tinned coating hence the silver color. They are solid copper.

Sweet dumpster score of a Reed 204 1/2

Going to degrease everything good, and not sure it I'm going to evaporust the whole thing, or wire wheel and naval jelly it. I could bead blast it aswell. Figure evaporust would be easiest, and will get everywhere inside the base, but it's the only thing I dont have on hand. Not sure if I will...

Sweet dumpster score of a Reed 204 1/2

After 2 days of soaking, and another reheat and go at it with the drag link, and some other home made attempts I wound up having to weld a nut on there anyway. Put some bead inside the nut to get some heat down the bolt. With a 32 mm socket and the longest bar I got it came loose!! Have to cut...

Balls are definitely forged onto the handle. Got the main screw cleaned up and polished out. Kinda want to leave most of the patina, so I didnt go to crazy trying to sand the pits out. The handle I was able to straighten pretty good. Its pitted bad, but most likely going to re use it. Anyone...

Got some work done on the vise. After some research on here, and some cleaning, I was able to date the vise at 10/1919!

REED R Series. Post your Reed date stamps.

Tons of info in here. Thanks to all who contributed. After going through all the pages, and checking out everyone's awsome Reeds, I've been able to date my new acquisition! Last patent of 1914, dated 1019! Over a century! Amazing. Both jaws stamped with a bolder 508.

Got the vise base soaking. The swivel stop bolt "not sure of the correct term" is unfortunately cracked up from getting beat with a hammer no doubt. Anyone e know if these handle ends are press and peened on?

Great thread! Most everything around here is repurposed! I'll start with my workbench/toolbox! Early 90's Russ Basset cabinet with 24x27x5" drawers on accuride ball bearing rails. This thing is loaded. Super heavyweight. I can stand on these drawers no problem. Double bench top. Power strips...

Did you have to use heat? I wish I had a bigger drag link socket. The width is good, could be a bit longer. I have an impact, maybe I'll try that!

Well, tried some acetalene and a drag link socket, but it wont budge. May try a 2 day submersion in something before I pull out the welder and weld a giant nut on there! It spins freely now, but I still want to pull it apart for a proper clean and lube. Also anyone know how the end knobs are...

Sweet dumpster score of a Reed 204 1/2

Looking to date this vintage vise I pulled from the dumpster at work. Last patent is 1914. Dont think it's in terrible shape other than bent levers and rust. Few nicks here and there, we'll see once its stripped of rust. Still have to get the main bolt loose. Havnt tried any heat yet. The one...
