Metal Drawer: bend fewer pieces or weld more pieces?

Nice work. My drawer should look exactly like yours, but with no double slide. Yes, I figured that 1/8" sheet is going to challenge me. I considered perforating the bend line with my plasma cutter, as I mentioned above, effectively reducing the amount of metal that I would have to bend...

Metal Drawer: bend fewer pieces or weld more pieces?

Wow. What a terrific community. Thank you so much. Tarmy, I see your tack welds along the drawer seams. Did you also fill in the seams with weld beads and, if so, how did you control against heat warping? Bounce around with stitch welds until all seams were filled?

Metal Drawer: bend fewer pieces or weld more pieces?

I'd like to learn from someone else's headaches rather than make another of my own. ;) Here goes. I'm fabricating a single metal drawer (~ 27" x 13" x 8") to fit an existing frame. I'm using 1/8" mild sheet because that is what I have on hand. Yes, it is overkill for a drawer. I have a HF...

    Mill Scale Removal for paint

I bought a stack of Walter FlexCut mill scale removal discs. They don’t clog or glaze, and they eat mill scale for lunch. I used a bunch when I prepped a lot of scrap plate in building my welding table. Alas, they’re not cheap, but they work!

I have a idea for a tool. What do I do next?

Making this for you, family, and friends? Have at it. If you want to monetize your idea, such as by selling it or licensing in Canada or elsewhere, you’ll likely need a patent in each applicable country. And for heaven’s sake don’t spill the beans to anyone, like your machinist, without a...

A neophyte makes a downdraft plasma cutter table

Thanks a lot. 😉 Yes, my table essentially eliminates the fumes. As I noted above, the exhaust fan is just a cheap HF, but that does surprisingly well. It is too small to handle fumes from the longest cuts on thick plate. However, I tend to screen (block) non-used areas of the table for shorter...

Thank you. I stood on the shoulders of others to arrive at my table. Plagiarize away.;)

    Show us your welding projects

<smacks forehead> You're quite right -- after I posted I found your earlier thread with my input. Anyway, the outcome looks great. A matter of personal preference, I like the 'mottled' look, as you say, over a completely uniform black patina (like paint).

    Show us your welding projects

I like your work! How did you like working with PrestoBlack? What, if anything, did you subsequently apply as a clear or protectant coat?

Fein Slugger vs Evolution S380CPS 15” Chop Saw

I have the Fein. It was one of my tools that I figured I’d have for a long time, so I dropped the coin. Man, if I can cut anything with it, I will. The fence is solid, and all cuts have a mirror finish. Good choice.:rocker:

After looking at the spark arrestor on a generator I used during a power outage, I was beginning to arrive at the same idea. Thanks! ;)

Anyone use Prestoblack to blacken steel?

It is the presence of air (O2, specifically), not water or alcohol, that causes rust. There is simply no escaping that. 70% alcohol is fine; it is what I used on a recent project. What I noticed is that a final wipe and dry will leave (to form) a little rust, but once I hit the dried surface...

Anyone use Prestoblack to blacken steel?

No, I do not recommend denatured ethanol because it contains, and can leave residues of, various additives that could negatively affect subsequent coatings or, worse, be toxic in concentration when the ethanol evaporates. Just grab a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and you’ll be good to go. And...

Anyone use Prestoblack to blacken steel?

I’ve used black patina from Sculpt Nouveau many times on steel. Apply, sit, rinse, and dry with compressed air. The rust is nearly unavoidable, but it CAN be removed easily by wiping the surface with a lint-free cloth and rubbing alcohol. Yes, it works. I have to do that between each “coat,” and...

A neophyte makes a downdraft plasma cutter table

You know, that was my only serious hesitation with the downdraft feature. I figured that the convoluted path slag would take from cut metal to exhaust port would allow minimal if any slag or spark escape. Just in case I would ever be wrong about that, I have two fire extinguishers within 2 or 3...

A neophyte makes a downdraft plasma cutter table

Appreciate the encouragement. I’ve welded a lot more since this project’s inception, and my work indeed improved. Love the quote. I’ll have to remember that one.

A neophyte makes a downdraft plasma cutter table

Thank you. I bought the SS sheet at a local metal scrap yard. The sheet wasn’t scrap, in the sense that it still had poly film on one side. SS was total overkill, but the yard has no mild sheet, and I don’t have to worry about rust.

A neophyte makes a downdraft plasma cutter table

Last year when I wanted to fabricate some metal and wood furniture, I had to figure out how to cut curves in metal plate. I stumbled across something called a plasma cutter. I had no idea what it was. Then I learned what one could do, and I had to have one, and I wound up with a PrimeWeld...
