I was able to get started on the actual core support today. I got the upper portion of the core support squared away. Unfortunately this was the easy part of the core support as it was accessible, so it's all uphill from here. But on the bright side, it sure was nice being able to weld on a flat...

Ideas On How To Make 3/8 Sheet Metal Plugs

I don't use the start amp setting, I just run the 25-30 amps. That usually lets me weld around 75% pedal. I'll look it to them, I've seen both gas lenses and the pyrex cups, I've just never bought them.

I am, finally. It's been a while due to moving out of Las Vegas and getting to Pensacola, with all my training in between. But truth be told, I also did not get back into the garage as quickly as I could have out of sheer laziness. Thank you. I appreciate that very much. Thank you, and sharp...

    GTR Restoration and Build

Got out of training a bit early today so I spent some time in the garage again working on the front end of the car and was able to get a bit done. Gotta say, welding vertically, even little welds like I was doing was not a fun time. The following pics give an idea of what I was working on. The...

Ideas On How To Make 3/8 Sheet Metal Plugs

The harbor freight tool was the perfect solution. I was actually in there the other day looking for something along the lines of this tool, but I couldn't find anything. I went back and stared at shelves for way too long until I found it this time. It's obviously cheap considering it's Harbor...

I agree, I turned it up because I thought I wasn't getting enough at the time. DC, torch negative.

That's a great idea, thank you.

Well, it has been a hot minute since I have updated this thread. I'm all through my move and in training, now residing in Pensacola for the next year or so. I've mostly been just working on getting better at welding sheet metal, both **** joints and spot welds, as I'll eventually be welding in...

Ideas On How To Make 3/8 Sheet Metal Plugs

So I have a TIG. I run 3/32 tungsten. I run it at 30 amps, and 30 CFM (on the flow meter) of Argon. I know that's a little higher than need be, but I think my flowmeter may not be accurate, that's why I run it high. And I run 3-5 seconds of post flow. I don't run pulse at all. That's the basic...

Ideas On How To Make 3/8 Sheet Metal Plugs

I've actually been practicing with 22 gauge on my bench, and yes I am using a TIG. I have been backing the holes with copper. I've been running a 3/32 tungsten and about 30 amps max on the machine with some post flow, no pulse at this time. I've experimented with 3/32 rod which does not melt...

Ideas On How To Make 3/8 Sheet Metal Plugs

Of everything said in this thread, this is the most valid. I'm definitely practicing and trying to build the skills. But, the 22 gauge is exponentially more difficult in my book than even 20 gauge. I've been experimenting with numerous amperage settings, tungsten grinds, and filler diameters...

Ideas On How To Make 3/8 Sheet Metal Plugs

Any idea on a vendor who has them in 22 and 20 gauge steel as well? Just extra info to clarify why I'm doing this. I would love to buy about 20-30 plugs in both 20 and 22 gauge, in both 1/4 and 3/8 diameters. As much as I wish I could weld professionally and fill the holes without issue, I can...

Ideas On How To Make 3/8 Sheet Metal Plugs

Just certain areas of it, like sections of the front core support and the flanges it gets spot welded to on the chassis. Not the entire chassis. Though it is an R32 GTR and they have thinner steel than you'd expect in some places.

Ideas On How To Make 3/8 Sheet Metal Plugs

Repairing sheet metal on a chassis, there are quite a few holes that could use a 3/8 plug on both horizontal and vertical surfaces. Seemed like it'd make life a bit easier to slip a plug in place and weld it in rather than welding the holes up without a plug.

I haven't checked into anyone local who can make them. The more accurate the better. And I probably need 20-30.

Ideas On How To Make 3/8 Sheet Metal Plugs

Long story short, I need to make a number of 3/8 metal plugs out of 22 gauge sheet metal. I've looked for a hole saw, but there aren't any that small and usually the are based on O.D. anyways. Considered a punch of some sort, but it looks like hand held punches tend to have a sharp locating...

I'd like to replace the whole quarter because there are so many issues with it. Not only is there rust in the lower areas, there is rust where the rear window sits and where the side window trim is. Replacing the whole thing would be ideal. A small portion of the inner fender will have to be...

    GTR Restoration and Build

Yes, at least for the time being. Late this year or early next year I will be moving on as I got picked up to be an officer and have to go to training for that. True. This car would have been binned a decade ago. But now, worse cars will still pull a decent amount of money. I'm curious to see...

    GTR Restoration and Build

Last two weeks have been fairly busy, I'm back to work full-time again since my base is going back to normal ops. As such, I have not had much time in the garage. However, I was able to finally track down a right hand rear quarter panel. The one on the car is in pretty bad shape. The rear...

Verifying Original Frame Measurements I was able to measure the front end, based on the Japanese spec sheet I had, and verified all the measurements were correct. I need a translated copy to be certain though as some of the text explains where reference points are, at least I believe. Using the...
