What piece of equipment to buy first?

I have a dream of having a shop that big, and I can tell you the first piece of machinery I'll buy. I can also tell you, I think it's a really good fit for the needs you describe. I want a mini-telehandler. Like an agricultural one - I like the New Holland ones because, you know, blue. With a...

    Astro Pneumatic Tool Company

Chris, have you given any thoughts to selling sockets and wrenches individually? I'm a huge fan of flex extension sockets, they fit in difficult places that sometimes nothing else will get to. I can actually see myself using the 21 and 24mm ones for alignment/suspension work, but if I bought the...

A Savage Inventory of the Tools That Actually Matter

    1. Mitutoyo Digimatic Absolute Coolant Proof 6" calipers. I use them every day, for everything they fit on. They're the greatest metrology tool ever made. Indestructible, hyper accurate, easy to use, they're even beautiful. I cannot even consider owning any other. 2. Knipex 95-05-185 combination...

Socket Foam - Most Space Efficient?

I'm of the opinion that foam is almost never the most space efficient option. I have it in a few places because it looks cool, but my toolbox is about 50% toolgrid and it makes a massive difference in organizing

Air Compressor for the Shop - New or Used, 40/60/80 Gallon?

Anyone have any input on the California Air Tools 80gal 6hp 220v compressor, 80060C? Says it's only 24 amp peak draw, so conceivably I could run it on my 30a 220v circuit. Pretty appealing to get something with this much CFM but can run on singlephase 30amp AND only 76dB. I can't see a downside...

Step bit - why didn’t I get one of you sooner

Wait until you try Norseman Vortex Point. All the joy of a step bit and a twist drill at the same time.

Introducing New Flarenut Crowfoot Sets & 12-point Nano Sockets

My immediate feedback is that 78319T is kind of an inconvenient part number. It's difficult to search for 78319T without getting search results that are for the existing 78319 set. I wish you'd chosen a different part number for this set. The tools look great though, I'm looking forward to...

What do I need to drill into this steel?

Use a die grinder with a flap disc on it to clean the spot first, hit it with a center punch, and use a step-tip drill bit like Norseman Vortex Point or the Astro Turbostep (Matco Hyperstep). Spritz a little Tap Magic into the flutes of the bit now and then. You'll zip through every hole in no...

New Vim 1/4 Comfort Grip ratchets

You could barely give me VIM products for free with how useless and flimsy the ones I've tried have been, and their knockoff rebrands of ratchets and drill bits marked up to prices higher than Snap-On is like some kind of sick joke. The best ratchets on the market are Snap-On, Matco, Koken...

What Tool Is The Bane of your existence? I'll go 1st

This should not be your experience. With a center punch and a spritz of Tap Magic, Vortex Point Norseman go through sheet metal like most bits go through hardwoods. Great drill bits completely change the experience of putting holes in metal.

What Tool Is The Bane of your existence? I'll go 1st

phillips head screws and screwdrivers. i don't care how perfect your screwdriver fits, half the screws are made of paper and just crumble to a puddle of shards and goo. i literally will not use a screw or bolt unless it's got a torx head, a robertson head, or an internal or external hex head...

I seem to be at a point where I don't need any new tools for the first time I can recall.

Honestly, I'm getting to the point where I also kind of have everything, except very expensive things. When I'm in a similar order, needing to reach a free shipping threshold, I usually stock up on consumables but I've also started picking up metalworking consumables odd sizes of taps, dies...

Been waiting for someone to test the Astro pneumatic slide hammer and here it is.

If I had this problem I feel like I'd just buy a chunk of 4140 rod, drill an 11/16 hole in it, and wrap it in grip tape or something.
