How an old feller lifts that 16 inch tire and rim back onto the hub

Just did a front brake job on my old F250 work truck. Since the front two were off, might as well swap the rears onto the fronts. It definitely hasn't gotten any easier. Lying on the tarmac to position the jacks, getting up and down hasn't gotten any easier either. Why not pay someone to do...

    Vintage Butcher Block

Very nice work, everyone. Yes, it's futile to point out "butcher block" originally refered to wood glued together with the end grain up as the work surface. It was the meat cutters work surface forever. The original butcher's block was a tree stump. I've seen them in use in...

Don't use it, in the way, can't get rid of it

At a garage sale recently, I picked up a nice Kennedy #360 Mechanic's Chest for cheap; didn't really need it, but too good a deal to pass up. Carrying the chest out to the car, I spotted the lift-out socket tray which sits in the top till underneath the lid. So proud of myself for getting...

Black and Decker Workmate Manufactured Date question

First, define jaws. You're showing the planks which serve as the work table. Some would call the inserts which fit in the round holes in the planks the jaws. The planks are universal; those I've seen would fit early or late Workmates. jack vines

Tools you hate but wont die to replace

My Ryobi stuff dies regularly, but there always seems to be a critical mass remaining, so that replacing a battery or a charger is less expensive than replacing it all. jack vines

Which cordless tool brand is going to have the longest production life?

Those who've successfully exchanged a "guaranteed" Rigid tool or battery, please share. FWIW, over the years, most times I've attempted to utilize a "lifetime warranty", or even a time-limited warranty, there were so many barriers, hoops, requirements; all purposefully written to prevent the...

Given the cost of shipping these days does trying to trade tools make any sense?

For true. Not so much for profit, but just for the good of the GJ order, I've always picked up random stuff I knew someone here would want. Once, I got several NOS Plomb war finish sockets; I'd like to get them to good homes, but $5 each for shipping is the deal-breaker. This past Sunday, I...

Went on my first estate sale haul and failed badly

For true. When someone asks, "Where'd you find that?" I say, "I started looking for it fifty years ago and eventually a good deal came along." jack vines

Given the cost of shipping these days does trying to trade tools make any sense?

I've got extras of random Snap-on ratchets, wrenches, sockets, et al. The thought was to make up a list of my extras and my WTTF (want to trade for) and see if there was any interest. However, now that a USPS Small Flat Rate Box keeps going up, now $8.45, how could we make an economical trade...

    Favorite Knife Steels

In the good old days, before today's generation of airport body scanners, my travel carry was a ceramic/carbon fiber folder similar to this one. It went around the world several times. jack vines

Has anyone ever paid retail for a Kennedy tool chest?

Yeah, forgot this is GJ. I thought I stole it for $25. Along comes no704 who got his for free. Who's gonna be the next guy in who says somebody paid him to take it away, filled with Snap-on? ;>) jack vines

Has anyone ever paid retail for a Kennedy tool chest?

Just did an inventory and now have nine Kennedy boxes. Five are the 7-drawer machinist's chests which hold all the small, round tooling for various machines. Two, including this latest find are the red mechanic's chests, with fewer, larger drawers. jack vines

Snap-on FRES torque spline 3/8" drive??

I was wondering why these were inch-sizes; however, if they're for aircraft, aren't most aircraft fasteners still inch-spec? jack vines

Has anyone ever paid retail for a Kennedy tool chest?

Wow! Can't beat free. However, now, every day you drive by there and don't see something equally great, you'll go home disappointed. ;>) jack vines

Has anyone ever paid retail for a Kennedy tool chest?

It's a multi-varable regression analysis. I've done a couple of total restorations; BTDTNA. I've bought a few project boxes if the price was close enough to zero. I'm using one Kennedy 7-drawer, missing a lock and which someone painted purple. It's otherwise sound and perfect for sitting...

Snap-on FRES torque spline 3/8" drive??

In a random small garage sale lot, there were four Snap-on FRES 3/8"drive torque spline adapters. Sixty years of this and never heretofore seen those. What is the application? jack vines

Has anyone ever paid retail for a Kennedy tool chest?

Over the past fifty years, I've picked up a dozen various used Kennedy machinist's chests and mechanic's chests and one roller cabinet. The prices ranged from $25 - $50 for the 7-drawers to $350 for a chest-and-roller stack. Yesterday, having promised and sworn off garage sales for almost two...

Stroke Metal Shaper age and Value

I first ran a shaper almost sixty years ago. An old machinist told me, "You can make most anything with a shaper; except money." FWIW, the smaller Atlas, South Bend, et al, shapers sell for decent bucks. jack vines
