    A Rant About Builders

IMO, houses are designed for women, since they are often the ones who influence the final decision on which house to buy. The emphasis is placed on the kitchen and bathrooms, and basically the rest of the house. Especially in the city, house size is maximized for a lot, and the garage is an...

    nOOb ordered from Big Floors

Looks like there is a slight gap between tiles? If there is a 1/8" gap, over 23' that could account for the 4" difference. Did you measure the tiles to check/verify their true size?

    totally confused

I was in the exact same position as you. I have a newly-constructed house with an attached 26'x24' 2-car garage. I've been thinking about what kind of floor I wanted, and have been going back and forth between epoxy/polyaspartic coating, porcelain tile, VCT, or plastic tiles. I ended up...

    HOA crushed my dream building

Well, one thing I can think of is to hire an architect, and design a computer rendering of the addition and how it would look within your property as well as the adjoining properties. If you can design it like it was part of the original house, that may persuade them to allow it. Their biggest...

If I had a day job, I wouldn't be quitting it

Don't remember the tile manufacturer off the top of my head, but they are from Italy. The main tile is 18x18 and was on sale for $3/sq.ft. There aren't as many deals up here compared to the States. The dark brown tile was $8/sq.ft., and are 12x24. Nice thing about them is that they are not...

If I had a day job, I wouldn't be quitting it

The tire rack is sold by Canadian Tire. Don't know who would sell a similar rack in the US.

    Finally installed Maxjax!

Don't forget to take into consideration the height of the garage door, opener, and any lights overhead where you plan on installing the lift. That can take a foot or so of space. Try to get high-lift rails for your garage door and a Liftmaster 3800 opener.

    Lift for tall guys.

Any reason why you can't get a rolling stool so you can sit while working on the car? That way any 2-post will work, and you would be a bit more comfortable (assuming the lift is a clear-floor model).

If I had a day job, I wouldn't be quitting it

Floor almost finished Well, I finally finished the floor. Just have to seal the grout and clean off the grout haze from the tiles. Then a wash and rinse and it's done. Some pics of the floor. Don't have an overall view because of the stuff in the garage. And the NSX had to go back in to...

New flooring in the house--Opinions on Armstrong Alterna & Alterna Reserve wanted

Re: New flooring in the house--Opinions on Armstrong Alterna & Alterna Reserve wanted While I don't have any first hand experience with the Alterna vinyl tiles, I do have the Armstrong Luxe vinyl planks in my new house. I spec'd that for my floors because I needed something waterproof and easy...

Tiling pros - What did I do wrong?

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm guessing that the most likely reason is too damp a sponge when I was wiping the grout. The grout was definitely not too watery. If anything, it was a bit thick. I got some grout haze remover, and will try it in an inconspicuous spot to see if it does anything...

Tiling pros - What did I do wrong?

First off, grouting *****. So the first section that I grouted, I thought I did everything right. (This was my very first time grouting.) However, the grout turned chalky when it dried. The second section that I grouted turned out fine. First section: Next section: You can especially see...

If I had a day job, I wouldn't be quitting it

Thanks. Right now I'm not planning on any transition, just ending the tile at the edge of the garage floor. Unfortunately, the driveway was already a bit lower than the garage floor, so the addition of the tiles makes for a bit of a ledge. I might try making a bit of a ramp with any leftover...

If I had a day job, I wouldn't be quitting it

So, the various posts on porcelain tiles have inspired me to do the same for my new garage. Decided to try my hand at tiling for the first time, and things are going much slower than anticipated. It is not quite as easy as what I saw on the various DIY shows on HGTV, that's for sure. So far...

Any free Drafting software out there ?

I find Sketchup quite easy to use compared to Autocad and other 3d modelling software. Just using the Rectangle, Offset, and Push/Pull tools, you should be able to create the garage in no time (assuming you plan for a rectangular garage). Remember that you can type in the size directly when...

No Room For A Lift So What About Cribs?

I basically sized them to my tires. Ended up around 22" long. Since I had some fairly wide tires, I used a 2x12 for the top board, but you can build this entirely out of 2x4s if you want. Just make sure to run them lengthwise. If you stack 3 pieces of lumber, that gives you a 4.5" lifting...

No Room For A Lift So What About Cribs?

Just how high is your ceiling? I'm assuming that you can at least stand upright? You can use the MaxJax at the lower of its two height settings. You can also build something like the cribs pretty easily with some wood. This is what I built, which is based on the "Nixit blocks." I saw these...

    epoxy vs. epoxy resin?

Hi all, am in the planning stages of a new house and attached garage. I've been looking at TheGarageGuy's website, and I am really interested in having a garage floor that has a marble appearance, kinda like this...

What would you do before you drywall?

What about a 240V outlet, in case you might want to power something like a compressor or a lift?

I bought an EZ car lift, was replying to the thread and it disappeared.

Alright, this is going to be picture-heavy. Here is a picture of the "guts" of the lift, where the screw connects to the legs of the lift. Notice that on the lower leg, the leg has pulled out of the "fitting" on the screw and will no longer stay in place. More on this later: For lowered...
