    Heat source for radiant?

I just fired up my radiant floor in Jan. If you are doing all electric, don't do radient floor heat, get a heat pump. You put 1 unit of energy into electric heat, you get 1 unit of heat. You put 1 unit into a heat pump and you can get 1.5 units of heat because it is moving heat from outside...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Made a bird feeder holder from some old framing squares, bike chain, conduit and other metal bits. Also installed a water fountain on the shop sink that work was throwing out.

    racedeck floors

Don't drop the truck in the garage? I would think that some plywood where the truck goes or some nice spaced 2x4 would do the trick.

    Building on sloped land

I had about 8 ft over the 50ft garage. Just dug it in. Bonus, that attic level was only 4 ft above finished grade, so a ramp and I store my ATV, mower, wood, all kinds of stuff. 1200 sq/ft of storage space!

Neutral bar will not accept 2 ga wire - can I split neutral into two 6 ga wires?

Can you add a different neutral bar that has larger holes? I had to use a lug with my neutral bar. No way to sand the ends a bit so it fits better?

    Heating option opinions.

Without decent insulation in the ceiling, you will loose all your heat quickly. Is the roof insulated and then sealed or can the heat go out the ridge vent? Fix your insulation before you do heat. Otherwise you will not buy the proper heat size device.

    Building My Garage, Good Price?

If you ever plan to put heat in it, you will need a ceiling. Living in PA you have cold winters and a heater is cheap.

outside lights working off the door opener

Sure can. Cheap and dirty way is to screw this into the socket and run a extension cord to the outside lights. Based on this visual schematic make something up that meets code. Or use a better suggestion from above.

    I don't have a clue :)

An electrician should be ok with you doing the grunt work of trenching, laying wire, and purchasing materials. Then they show up and make the final connections and charge you by the hour for explaining things to you and doing the hook ups. No one likes to dig trenches. As for a rate, well...

    LED Shop Lights

Thanks for this. I did a lot of research here which is how I found the Costco lights and seemed that everyone here recommended them. Hence why I chose that option. I read through that sticky, but must have missed those lights. Oh well. I will replace the Costco ones when they fail. Argh.

Good locking pliers and from where?

Going to be a tough question to answer since a lot of people here are from the states and we don't know what name brand tools are sold in the UK. Here in the states people like Snap-On (expensive), craftsmen, Huskey, Ridgid, Crescent, and a slew of other tools. If you want locking pliers...

    My New Heater

Looks good. I know it is supposed to be ok, but do you need to store cardboard right under it? :bounce:

    LED Shop Lights

Cybrdyke, This might be true, but your advice is not advice. You do not recommend a place to get a lighting layout. You don't offer options on "non shop" lighting that is better then my cheap $20 lights. Where can I get better lighting for a shop? My "big box ****" has been running for 5...

    Insulation retrofit

Welcome! With a space that large you are going to go bankrupt using electric as your heat source! I would suggest that you put a ceiling in and insulate above the ceiling with a minimum of R-30. Code in your area for a home is probably R-49. If you don't put a ceiling then all your heat is...

picts of your in-floor heat set ups.

Not sure what you mean by a pump controller. I just have a 120 volt thermostat ($20) that turns on the circulator pump when the air temp reaches 50 degrees. Once the tankless heater detects water movement it automatically turns on to heat the water. I have 4 loops of 250'. Temperature in the...

    LED Shop Lights

Check the "Lighting and Electrical" section of the forum. Tons of ideas there. The Costco lights mentioned above are great. I installed 3 outlets in the ceiling on a switch and ran 28 of those LED lights off the switches. Lots of light, cheap to do, easy to install. Just screwed them to...

    Radient Floor Build with Qs

The system has been running great for a few weeks. Took a bit to get the thermostat set properly because of the lag between when then T-stat says warm enough and the floor cools off. A huge bonus is that snow covered stuff melts off quickly and the floor dries in a few hours! Also made a...

Any gutter protection or gutter guards that actually work??

+1 for the micro mesh SS stuff. I live in the woods with leaves, pine needles, and pine cones. The mesh works very well. One disadvantage for me is the white pine needles are 4" long and lay on the mesh if there is not a hard rain. The water can run along the needle and go over the edge of...

    DIY Vacuum French Drain

I agree with checking outside first. Make sure gutters are going at least 10ft away from the house, water is graded away from the house. I think you idea would work, you can run it the whole way but drill less holes. Maybe put a 3/16" hole every 2 feet and see how the suction is. If it works...

    8" Flexible duct

Flex pipe does not have a good flow rate. If there was a way you could do half or more of that in solid pipe you would get more air into those spaces. If not, pull the flex tight and keep it from being bunched up or having a lot of turns. You will probably do a better job then the pros, but...
