need ELECTRIC right angle die grinder recommendations

Honestly the Hyper Tough 12 volt one isn’t half bad. I got stuck back in the winter doing a field repair on a piece of farm equipment where a normal grinder wouldn’t fit. I’ve not got a big enough operation to warrant an engine drive compressor. And I was miles from the nearest outlet. I also...

    Sockets!: Need to start over - 1/4 - 3/8 - 1/2"

If I was starting over I’d buy the Quinn 3/8” master set from Harbor Freight. I’d buy Vevor 1/2” impacts from Amazon or eBay. Then I’d go to Walmart and buy the Hart 1/4” set that’s in the plastic case that looks like a set of drill bits I think it’s like $24. In the last 3 or 4 years I can’t...

Is there a certain tool you use everyday for your job?

General contractor/carpenter, I also operate a small farm. I carry a Milwaukee fastback utility knife and a Leatherman Rebar. I use the Milwaukee many, many times a day to the point that I’m changing blades every couple days. The Leatherman is simply something to get me through a small task...

What’s your minimum handyman style toolkit for unexpected stuff at other people’s houses?

10 inch adjustable wrench 430 channellocks or equivalent Lineman’s pliers 6 in 1 screwdriver Average person would be shocked at what you can accomplish with those 4 tools. I’ve also always got a Milwaukee Fast Back utility knife in my pocket

How many of you buy duplicates of the same type of tool and what do you do with them?

I’ve got plenty of duplicates. If you work in multiple locations it quickly becomes a major PITA not to mention a total waste of time to constantly be packing up and moving basic core tools. This is how I ended up with two miter saws and two table saws because I never seemed to have a saw in...

    Streamlight Stylus Pro

I’m convinced they either changed the design or cheapened the components. I carried one of those for years. It was totally silver as all the finish had worn off. Finally lost it and ordered a replacement. The replacement lasted about exactly a month before it stopped working. Went through 2 or...

    Tractor toolbox

Lynch pins, shear bolts, spare top link pin, R clips, cotter pins, a couple electric fence insulators and some random nuts and bolts. Actual tools 12 inch adjustable wrench, wire cutters, medium sized channel lock, a couple cheap screwdrivers. There’s usually a chain and a 3 pound hammer in...

    Tool brands and buying habits

I’d be willing to argue that Kobalt and Quinn would be similar quality at an equal or better price point. Husky would also be a contender on certain items.

    Expendables - am I atypical?

Heck that would be like living down town for me! 42 miles to the nearest Lowe’s. Got 2 Ace hardwares within 20 miles although separate directions and a farm store that’s like walking into a time capsule. Napa and tractor supply within 20 miles as well

    3/4 Ratchet Set - Uses?

3/4 drive is pretty nice when you’re working on old rusty junk and the 1/2” impact just hammers and the 1/2” breaker bar flexes like a spring. I’ve used 15/16 and 1-1/8 quite a bit in 3/4 drive

Small dorm room tool kit for my niece.

I’m looking at this from a different perspective. I’m a residential contractor specializing in remodeling. I also do a lot of property maintenance for a friend who rents air bnbs. On my work truck in the drivers door pocket I keep 4 tools. Those tools are a 10 inch adjustable, 430 channel lock...

    Expendables - am I atypical?

I don’t have anywhere near that many drill bits, screwdriver bits or taps. I’ve got tons of bolts and machine screws. Got more electrical connectors and wire nuts. Heck I’ve probably got 300 wire nuts just on my work truck. At any given time I’ve got enough screws and fasteners to at minimum...

What’s your core set of powertools for general purpose handyman work?

Corded isn’t a bad thing if you’re close to an outlet. I still prefer a corded grinder. Corded circular saw makes a lot of sense to especially if you’re set up with saw horses in a stationary location. Most days I have both with a corded saw sitting at the horses and a cordless available to run...

Why the flashing light option on work lights

I assumed it was for signaling. Not all “work” lights stay in a shop setting. Could be useful working roadside at night.

Level for home renos/framing - value brands and useful sizes?

Ive always liked Johnson levels. I’ve had the same 2 and 4 foot levels in my work truck for years. Dont use them to screed concrete, tamp posts or as a pry bar. Use common sense and they will last a long time.

Things in your garage that you wish WEREN'T in your garage.

About 14 large totes of randomness from when we stopped doing craft shows about 5 years ago. I’ve got them up on a high shelf that runs the entire length of the back wall but it’s still in the way and at this point I doubt we will start doing craft shows again anytime soon. A rickety work bench...

What’s your core set of powertools for general purpose handyman work?

I’m going to start off by saying. I can’t think of any application in almost 20 years working as a remodeling contractor as well as doing a ton of building maintenance during that time frame where a die grinder would have been useful. Core tools: Drill and impact driver, you could skip the...

    I need a pole saw

I’ve been thinking about making a similar thread. I’ve got about 22 acres that I bush hog consisting of 5 separate fields that are heavily wooded around the edges and the trees are creeping in. The first pass around the fields are awful. Tons of stuff catching my the top of my cab and snagging...

Recommend a 3/8 Impact Socket Strategy

I don’t think it’s a crazy thought. I just think it would be prudent to have a set of shallow sockets as well. Even a cheap rail from harbor freight would be fine “just in case”
